You mean you did it yourself not at the dealer? If so, after how many miles? If it was less than half way through the recommended interval (< 7500 miles) I'd say leave it as it. You will probably want to change the oil at 15K miles and reset it then.

I did it myself at about 14,500 miles.

You changed it yourself, went and bought the oil, even though it's free from BMW? Did you do the other 15k maintenance as well?

Yeah, that's a bit weird. Any reason you did it yourself even though it was covered. I kinda assumed you did it at half interval or during break-in because it is not covered by BMW!

Key on, position 2. Hold left cluster button, service should come up. Scroll to oil service, push outer button on left stalk, should say reset, hit again and hold.

I agree with the above posts, unless you never plan on having the dealer change your oil.
You should let them do it, so there is a service record on file for that vehicle.

Not questioning, just curious. You can be a gentleman and tell us.

You should note there is no "position 2" for the key. It's either in the slot or it's not.

Are you trying to say push the button without pressing the brake pedal? That could be the equivalent to a position 2, all things on but with exception of the radio?

Oh, and to the OP, I like to change my own oil as well... and I could understand you doing it, but I would think that somebody might do an earlier oil change and then have the dealer provide the free one. I think most of us are curious as to why you wouldn't have them do it on BMW's dime and have a BMW-provided service record.

So no special tool is needed like I have read elsewhere. This is good. And, I decided to do it myself because I just wanted to. It is easier for me to do it this way.

Yes, postion 2 is equal to the key locked in, and the start stop pushed without pressing the brake. All the cluster lights will come on. Also known as KL-15.
No special tool is required.

turn the car on and crank it. wait until the seatbelt display goes out in the middle of the cluster and the time/date shows up. then press and hold the left cluster button until the display comes up in the middle. should show the oil can. the press the button on the blinker stalk and it should say reset. then press and hold the same button and it will reset.

I check my oil level all the time this way, there is no way to reset it like that, it would be stupid for BMW to have people accidentally resetting there service indicators, they WANT people to come in for service. Maybe I'm way off though, who knows. You would need a reset tool of some sort or the bmw computer. not sure if they have a tool that worked on the older cars like E36, E46, or a trick to short out a pin on the diag port.

you're not doing the procedure right if all it does is check your oil.

and the service indicator can be reset through the GT1, but it's easier to just do it through the cluster like I described above.

I have tried many times to find this reset lamp when i use the method above. Does not work at all. Any other ideas?

Hooray for the DIYer! I'm with you on this one. Yeah, the oil and filter is free, but the time it takes to drive the car to the dealership, talk to the service guy, get a loaner (or a ride), then repeat the process when it's done......well, I could easily change the oil myself on MY schedule. Plus, while I'm sure BMW techs are a bit better than your average tech, I just don't trust anyone with my cars except me.

The lack of support from BMW to the DIYers is one reason I've been holding out on taking the leap.

Curious: did you happen to snag an oil sample for analysis?

There's time cost associated with both (well, maybe your wife's time on the internet or something!). I've never had to get a loaner for an oil change from a dealer, I just schedule and it's usually <1hr, which would be about a trip to autozone for me.

You paid for the service, why not use it? I can see if you were changing it early, but it makes no sense.

My dealer provides complimentary internet access and donuts at their center :D. Next oil change I will be reading my email and browsing this forum while munching on a donut or two, without getting any oil on my hands or shirt *yuck*. I can think of more manly things to do if someone thinks changing the oil themselves increases their man-worthiness. Heck I even get a free car wash, why would i ever do something myself when someone else would do it for me for free.

Hobby cars should be old, where you're not prepaying service.

I think the key word was push and "hold". It should work then. I think. Not that I wuld know because I would never change the oil myself.

I would prefer not to prepay for the free service. But that is not an option. It's a marketing gimmick anyway, given the once a year or so oil changes that would result, and perhaps one air cleaner and a wiper or two. All the other consumables (i.e. brakes) would more likely outlast the 50,000 miles - after which the price for a BMW brake job is....well..... WAY out there!

And, yes, I would change the oil earlier than 15,000 miles. And, yes, the filters would arrive in my garage, thanks to the internet and my friendly UPS man. Even if I stopped by an auto parts store, it's fast in/out during off peak hours and I typically stock up on many filters at once.

I will not buy a car with a sealed engine bay - though it seems we are approaching this with some cars. For some it's just using the go and whoa pedal, and installing a smelly fluid once a week or so. But not I! ;)

I tried and tried to do it the way you are describing but it doesn't seemt to work. I have a 2007 328xi Coupe and you are 100% sure it can be reset this way??
