It is a HEMI engine!

Hemi (from "hemishpere") or "crossflow cyl head" is a design of engine in which the cly heads combustion chamber is of hemispherical form.

With the hemispherical combustion chamber design, the intake/exhaust valves are not parallel as in the wedge head; although this makes operating the valves more complicated, it allows larger valves, and better flow of air through the head (although the inlet and exhaust valves are not simultaneously open and there is no continuous flow). The spark plug in the center of the chamber makes for better ignition of the fuel/air mixture. These aspects help make the hemi-type engine more efficient and powerful, and less prone to engine knock.

I have read in places, maybe in BMW literature, that the 540's compression space, formed by the canted valves in the BMW head, does resemble a hemisphere, though only roughly so.

So while it is not a hemi, in the sense of Chrysler's hemi's or any true hemispherical combustion chamber, the motor's compression space does roughly resemble a hemisphere.

Many engines over the years have used a true, and semi-true, hemi shape. The Drake and the turbo'd Offy, both 4 cylinder motors that were used years ago in Indy racing, were hemis and cranked out some phenominal numbers.

True hemi's are usually 2 valve motors as its close to impossible to put 4 valves in a true hemispherical head.

I believe the early Triumph, Harley, Norton and Indian motorcycles were all hemi's.

Frank, you're really taking this forum far too seriously. If you're not aware, the majority of forum members here are between the ages of 18-24 and still in college. We like to have fun :) We like to use "cartoons", as you call them, to express emotions. We say things amongst ourselves that others (old people) may deem a little raw. That's just a fact of life.

1: You all need to chill out about the name calling. It is stupid.
2: The moderator especially needs to chill out with the name calling. It violates the rules. Since his job is to uphold the rules of the forum and mutual respect within it, he becomes hypocritical when he violates the rules by engaging in name calling.
3: Franka, you need to be a bit less self-congratulatory about being "one intelligent man standing up for blah blah blah..." You didn't march to Washington with Martin Luther King Jr. to protest Jim Crowe, or with Nelson Mandella against Apartheid. If you read the earlier threads I was being called all kinds of names. I resisted responding in like. I asked the moderator to step in but he too is in the name calling to his eyeballs.

As a moderator you could, even should, be setting a better example for all the young ppl that visit these pages. Stereotyping groups of Americans is not what someone in authority should be allowing, yet alone engaging in themselves and even starting.

I have tried to have an intelligent debate with franka regarding this 'mess' and it was futile as you have read. everything after that post is just fluff from franka in an attempt to try and justify (in some strange Bizzaro world style attempt) his melt down on this forum.
