well... the 540i started out with the M60, which was a 4.0L V8... maybe they just got lazy and decided not to change it?

Yup...Just like saying....

"You have lifetime fluid in your transmission. Magic keeps it from breaking down like regular oil"

"Don't worry about oil changes so much. Change it every 15k. BMW fairies will keep the oil from breaking down after that much use"

"Yes.....Yes, your radiator is made with plastic. No.....No, it shouldn't have exploded on you at 60k........That will be $670 please"

"Oh your VANOS is having problems? That's normal. Give us $4k and we'll fix it :)"

"Yes, we know our new cars are pretty ugly"

Pretty stupid folks if you ask me, but DAMN do I love what they do well :buttrock

To be honest...BMW has been rounding up or rounding down model numbers for decades. Although we normally think that the last 2 digits of the model number match the engine's liters...it doesn't always happen that way. Sometimes we begin to take things as fact, then BMW will "tweak" things...like the order of the suffix (from ix to xi AND iL to Li) or the meaning of an alpha character (like C & c)... it used to stand for Coupe or convertible...but now has changed from its standard (suffix) placement used in the 80s & 90s and if small or large cap is used to indicate soft top designation or coupe.

For example (off the top of my head):
2.7 liter I6 cyl engine was in the E30 325e & E28 528e
5.6 liter V12 engine was in the E31 850CSi
5.4 liter V12 engine was in the (later) E31 850Ci & E38 750iL
4.4 liter V8 engine was in the (later) E31 840Ci, E38 740i/iL, E39 540i/iT
4.4 liter V8 engine in the E60 545i, E63 645Ci, & E65/E66 745i/Li
4.8 liter V8 engine in the E60 550i, E63 650Ci, & E65/E66 750i/Li

the e90 3 series are all 3.0's but the models are 325, 330, and 335 and the differnece is horsepower and turbos
