I'm in the market for a new car next year. Our 2000 Jetta TDI is a bit small for our growing family. I actually would have never thought of buying a BMW but it looks like a diesel might be offered in 2008. If so, does anyone know which one? I looked at the BMW Germany site and they have a range of diesles. I know that in the US, we get the short end of the stick when it comes to high performance diesels (at least with VW). I hope BMW decides to sell the 335d here in the states. I don't want a gasser as I've driven plenty of diesels here and in Germany. I know that they can provide plenty of performance, easily modified and give great economy. Is this going to be a wait and see kind of thing or does anyone know of any specifics when it comes to the diesel.

Is a 335 really any bigger than a Jetta? If it is, I don't think it's by much.

I was in Germany in 2006 and had a diesel BMW rental from Avis. Let me tell you it was fantastic. Power just everywhere and a lot cheaper than running mogas, esp. in Europe. It made me want a BMW all over again (which is why I joined this board). Now I'm trying to decide if it's going to be a 328xi or hold out for a 300hp 135i when they come out for '08......
It seems to me that the economy in the U.S. is robbed by higher cost per gallon for diesel.

It is most likely to be the 3.0 tubodiesel with something like 472 pounds of torque and 286 hp which is almost as fast as a gasser.
I think maybe later in 08 they will arrive to meet the 50 state use.

I drove a 120d in Europe for a week and the torque is very noticeable compared to my old E46 330i. The E90 335d has gulps of torque down low.

I wouldn't be surprised if BMW elects to re-introduce Diesel power to the US in the 5 series cars. That market segment is more likely to appreciate a diesel powered car than the other segments.

Mercedes has the bluetec diesel in the E-Class and ML class. My guess would be BMW's first US diesel car would be a 5-series and X series, probably X5 and possibly X3 as well. Probably begin a bigger line-up for 2009 if it does well. I would like an AWD turbo diesel 3 series coupe! My mom has the 2007 bluetec E320, the car is phenomenal for anyone looking for a diesel car now!
