View Full Version : gas tank not full??
nwbie329 07-03-2007, 11:13 AM Hi guys, quick ques, all replies are appreciated! The past 2-3 times I've filled up my gas tank, (07 328xi), the pump stops at full, but the gauge is not reading full, it's reading bet 3/4 and full, has anyone else had this problem, if so what is it, it's never happened before, so i'm a little confused. thanks again!
SomeBMWGuy 07-03-2007, 11:23 AM I get that. I dont' know why it does it but if you lift up on the nozzle it seems to help. And make sure it's sealing when it's pumping.
Beer Goggles 07-03-2007, 09:22 PM Some pumps will pump too fast and cause some foaming, which will then trip the safety in the pump. Try filling it slower, or wait a few minutes then pump it again. You can hit the start button to watch the gauge.
What station are you using? Name brand I hope. Also try another station.
mryakan 07-04-2007, 12:36 AM Only once I had a problem filling up an almost empty tank where the pump kept tripping from the get go and would barely pump 5 cents worth before tripping again. I tried easing on the nozzle and that didn't seem to help. After some perseverance the pump stopped acting up and all was ok. I bet it is that particular pump since I never experienced this with any other pump, but it can also be a combination of the tank design and a faulty pump trigger. Best to try another pump/station and see what happens.
I believe I heard something at my dealer about some type of TSB for a faulty fuel gauge reading. You might want to check it out with them
nathan56989 07-04-2007, 12:25 PM for e90 vehicle produced up to september 2006 there is a bulletin stating that there is a faulty fuel sending unit cap. The bulletin is 16-03-06. Take it to the dealer and have them check that.
Twiggyklp1 07-04-2007, 12:33 PM I have an 07 328xi coupe and that was happening to me non-stop. I couldn't get a dollars worth of gas in the car before it would knock the pump off. I ended up taking it in, and they replaced everything...the sensor, vent, etc. Apparantly, they said it is a pretty common problem.
nwbie329 07-18-2007, 02:14 PM hey guys, just wanted to update any of you who may be having the same problem. took the car in today and they just called to say that it is the tank, the sensor and gauge and they all need to be replaced. just wanted to let you guys know, thanks again for the previous responses!

Glad they found it and fixed it but jeeze, these are 50K cars were talking about. Sounds like an American car issue....... :(
nwbie329 07-18-2007, 03:46 PM yeah, i completely agree!!!!!!!!!! it's gonna take them 2 days to fix but still, it shouldn't have happened to a brand new, $47k car with 1300 miles on it, they should have done a better job checking them out before sending them out!!!!
yakitiyak 07-18-2007, 11:23 PM I've had that happen to me like 3 times and its always at the same gas station. So I stopped going there. I am taking my baby in for a check up on Friday. Little rattle when I open the moonroof (is that normal), maybe I should just mention this to the dealer.
nwbie329 07-19-2007, 09:10 AM that's what happened to me, it happened 1-2 times when filling up, then i went to a diff station and it still did it. i would def mention it to them, they already know that this is a problem with some of them. knock on wood, have had no problems with the sunroof, so can't help you there!
