Does AI let passengers ride-along on your runs? If I come, I want to bring a friend along and have them ride with me... they don't feel comfortable co-driving my car.

I probably can't make it, but what are the rules concerning verts? What safety equipment do I need? I currently own a hard top, but I don't have roll bars.

leepic
07-07-2007, 01:31 PM
Convertibles - rollbars not needed unless you use a 5-point harness. If just using a seatbelt, no problem. Miata's and S2000's run all the time!

Cyrix2k
07-07-2007, 01:38 PM
Thanks. Would I need the hard top or can I run with the top down?

Oh, I also forgot that I have mismatched tires... I'd assume that cause me to fail the safety inspection? They're all the same size, but they are different brands.

Is there anywhere I can see all the rules for the safety inspection and track? Thank you.

Shouldn't be a problem.

Here's a handy site to check out for classification and rules: http://www.moutons.org/sccasolo/

Top down is fine, everyone does it...

As long as the tires are in good condition they will pass. I've seen many instances where participants had mis-matched tires.

I'm in with my M roadster. I'll be running in the last group of the day. Who's running when? Can we get a list going? I see we have (2) D stocks, (2) ASP's, (1) STU, and (2) SM's. There's only 97 people signed up at this time so there's still plenty of space left.

Gbauer: ASP, 1998 M Roadster (programmed), with the top down, of course!

ok... I have a few more questions if you guys don't mind. After reading through the rules, my car has a modified air box and a high flow cat. Everything else is stock - wheels, brakes, suspension, everything. It looks like the intake prevents me from running in the stock class, so I would need to move to touring (STS), but touring doesn't allow high flow cats, only stock cats. That means I'm touring extreme (STX), correct? Also, I don't have a helmet at the moment. How much does one cost and do you think I could make it by with a loaner / borrow one at the event? I do have a dirt bike helmet but I'm assuming a different type is required for auto crossing, right? And finally, what time would the event be over by? I'm trying to decide if I can make it as I have to be at a graduation party by 3 though I could probably arrive a bit late. Thanks!

Class - DSP (E36, E46 non-M), BSP (E36 M3)
helmets - AI has loaners, dirtbike helmets are ok, just have to be Snell '95+
If you run morning heat, 3 is no problem. Run order is listed @ autocrossersinc.org

is there some sort of charge if I just came to watch? none of my families cars are really ready for auto x right now, but I thought it would be cool to see what its like, and then hopefully in a few weeks I can be out there in my 325.

Well..... I suck. Regardless, it was a blast! The M Rowdy is 10X better than my old modified to the hilts maxima ever could have been! There just ain't nuthin' like taking a RWD car around a corner sideways and have it all legal!

Even though I managed to finish last in my class (fawking cones!), I did get my revenge on a Z06 on the way home! I was cruising home with my buddy following and we passed a normal Z06. I looked over and saw it was an old guy driving so I didn't think much of it. About two minutes later, I look up in my rearview and see him coming up on me at what looked like around 100 or so. He passed and I could tell by the sound that the guy was giving it all he had. Now I'm not one to fall for bait very often, but... Well, let's just say that I never imagined that the tires would chirp at 80 going into 3rd. I caught him at 115 or 120 and just kept on walking past him to 130 or so (empty stretch of road. No way in HELL would I do that any other way!). I shut down just after that and the A-hole actually kept it up and put on his flashers when he passed like some stupid 16 year old driving daddy's car! I couldn't believe that a 60-70 year old man would actually do that! Oh well, at least I learned that the M roady really is something to be respected.

Oh, one more thing: my buddy in his 3.slow won on a very clean last run. He did very, very well for his first time out. Me, on the other hand, should have done better but I'm just re-learning how to drive a RWD car. Finally started getting somewhere on the 4th run but I hit a cone and lost 2 seconds for a finish at 55.6ish.

Great to meet you guys! We have to do it again soon!

Yes that driver had no effing clue how to drive or his car had the crap beat out of it and didn't have any gas in it period. A Z06 should RUN AWAY from you. Congrats on beating the driver. That is a better kill anyways.

Might not have been the driver sucking, he just might not have been willing to run over x mph on a public road or, one of numerous other reasons.

what equipment and settings did you use for your pictures? I took some, but since I was using stop down metering (I use a manual focus lens on an adapter), my shutter speed ended up being way too high for most of the pictures. Stopping down makes it hard to focus because of the darker viewfinder and wide DOF, so i think I'm going to invest in a set of ND filters for next time.

Here's two photos of mine. The first was shot at f/8, ISO100, and 1/500 second.

This one was shot at f/22 (?), ISO100, and 1/50 second

what equipment and settings did you use for your pictures?

I was shooting the on-course stuff with a Canon 1Dmk2n with a 70-200 2.8 and a 1.4x extender and a circular polarizer. The head on shots were generally at 1/200th, the panning shots were at 1/50, with some at 1/80. I usually play with ISO settings to keep the aperture in the 8 - 10 range.

EDIT: Can you correct any of your pic's issues with some post processing?

Alex

Cyrix2k
07-20-2007, 11:34 AM
Thank you... trying to fix the panning shots in post would be a huge PITA and they would never look right. I'm mostly trying to gain experience, so I look to see what I did right and what I did wrong, then try to improve next time. I was shooting with a 350D and an old Vivitar 80-200 f4-5.6.

No, I didn't run. My amplifier would have caused me to fail inspection. I was just in the area and stopped by. I was hoping to run in event #3, but it turns out we're leaving for vacation that morning so I'll have to wait until event #4. I did bring my car - I parked in the public parking area.

Here's some more... I may have others too. Also, if you want any in hi-res / no PS, let me know. These were all underexposed, so if they look overexposed, that's because of poor PS.

They're great! Thank you again. My photo skills are terrible.

There's always an event at Ripken, so I think there is a Porsche club, Philly SCCA, Subaru Challenge, BMWCCA, etc. event before the next AI. BMWCCA also runs in Sykesville. I'll probably do some more AI events by season's end.

Congrats on the trophy, Chris. It was certainly not my best effort...missing the start gate on my first run was a BAD omen.
