View Full Version : Need help with springs
cipher982 06-23-2007, 08:32 PM I'm stumped trying to figure out how to get these things on. Anyone have experience upgrading their springs on an e36? I had some trouble figuring out exactly how to get the old ones out, I only attempted the rear. Maybe one of you guys could come out sometime this week (not sunday) and help me swap them out? I can provide some food and maybe help out on anything you need done to your car.
cipher982 06-25-2007, 01:28 PM Nevermind, finished it all myself :D
miklm 06-25-2007, 10:31 PM A big-ass pry bar is what we used on the rear. Get a set of spring compressors on the rear.
cipher982 06-26-2007, 02:17 AM I used my fan clutch removal tool to get the rears out, ha. Then just removed the front struts and compressed the springs, then switched them out. Hardest part was getting the nut off the top of the struts, I sat in my garage for 30 minutes prying at that thing trying to get it off, then took it to advance and they used some air tools and got it off instantly.

I may be swapping/selling performance parts for stock parts & cash.
Trying to turn the car back to stock to sell it...

Call me or PM me if you start selling parts. I am most interested in suspension componentry, ie: front sway bar, etc.

If there's not enough interest generated by the car with all the upgrade goodies.
Then I'm parting out to turn back to stock.
Most likely before the summer is over is when I'd like to have the car sold.
Suspension stuff worth swapping:
Eibach Sway bars with adj link
Rear Camber adjust arms.
20k miles on H&R adjustable coil overs with wrench
X-brace
Other misc that can be swapped or parted:
Supersprint resonator w/ jet coating
B&B Tri flo DTM exhaust..race version...
3.5 Euro HFM, CAI, Custom chip...need original stock filter & housing (i still have old 3.0 HFM)
24 lb injectors to go with it..so I'd need the 17.5 lbs OEM ones
maybe 3.23 rear end for 3.15 stock 95 rear end...prolly a pain to swap.
Roll bar
cipher982 06-26-2007, 05:52 PM How's the exhaust? loud? soft?
mcbk1452 06-26-2007, 05:58 PM How's the exhaust? loud? soft?
LOUD but not annoying loud like the trucks around here.
We should all meet up soon....since my new roommate is a manager in training at Hooters. I'm not sure where he'll end up working (either 280 or Trussville).
I digress (can't help to think about those wings)...anyways..yeah...we need to meet up so the interested people in Bham can come check out the parts.
cipher982 06-26-2007, 06:40 PM I didn't really mind having no exhaust at all, so that sounds great to me. You can have my stock 325 exhaust :shifty
madsedan 06-28-2007, 12:52 PM Dam, haven't been on here in a few days, you should have called me, we could have knocked out the suspension swap, I've done it a few times.
cipher982 06-29-2007, 01:42 PM I also would like it if someone would let me dissect their passenger door so I can see how the window lift all goes together. I've checked the diagrams online and tried putting it together a few times, but it still doesn't seem right. The arms just tend to pop back out whenever I try to move it up more than a few inches.
madsedan 06-29-2007, 01:49 PM I might be able to help you with this, I did this fix on my M3 convertible. I had to pick up these 2 new white plastic clips in order for it to work, they broke, thats why the arms are popping out, but there is also a trick to getting them back in as well.
I should be home all weekend, if you want to come by or meet up somewhere we can see if thats the same problem you are having. Is the door panel off the door?
miklm 06-29-2007, 04:41 PM I've done this fix on all three of my E36s. Its much easier on the sedan than coupe.
Get two of those clips from BavAuto or Vines or the dealership, part number 51 32 1 938 884 -- I'd go ahead and order extra ones while you're at it. You might also want to pick up some 51 41 1 973 500 - Door Panel Clips in case some of those break taking it off and on.
I'll be at Barber for the SCCA races July 6-8 so either come to the track or get in touch with me that weekend and I'll help you fix this.
I bet if you just get new clips that aren't broken you're doing it right, you just have a faulty part. :)
