I am getting a dashboard reading saying 'Brake linings'.

Does this mean pads or could it mean handbrake shoes?

Coincidently, I took up the play in the handbrake Saturday and the message was triggered by heavy braking on the Monday

I just need to know what to buy, pads all round or brake linings for handbrake?

Any advice much appreciated

Andrew

Should just mean pads - I'm not aware of a wear sensor for the emergency brake.

Cheers for that

I have always known shoes to have brake linings but as you say, there are no sensors on the rear shows

I dont suppose you know what 'Trans program' means on the dashboard either do you? I got this after I fitted a replacement dashboard from another car and have adopted the new cars mileage etc

Cheers

Trans Program is not a good thing, but may only be indicative of a faulty electrical connection in your case.

bmwe34.net is a good technical resource as well.
