View Full Version : M5 Fuel Issues ?
Wow my car is got a death wish. Driving around yesterday, stalled out on me in the middle of the road. Try starting it, just turns over but no idle or anything. Had to get it flat bedded to my garage and then after 120 bucks it starts ! Then this morning i try to start it and it has the roughest idle ever and when you touch the throttle it dies. The problem yesterday was that my fuel pump wasnt turning on. Now it turns on but the car dies when you touch the throttle. Whats going on with my M5 ? Is the fuel pump not getting enough voltage ? Clogged fuel filter ? Anything ! Any ideas give me a shout i need some help bad :(
Started the car , it starts and idles for maybe a min, and then it starts stalling out again. Dad thinks its the fuel filter . Any thoughts ? Help Please
TC535i 06-19-2007, 02:25 PM It's rarely the fuel filter. Sounds like something else is bad... Check for vacuum leaks, bad idle control valve, MAF unplugged, etc etc. If you give it gas it dies? Sounds like unmetered air and a bad mixture. See what check engine lights it's pulling up, do a search for "stomp test" to figure out how to read them.
de Witt 06-19-2007, 02:38 PM Yeah, do a stomp. Its probable that it is the fuel pump.
I Hope its not the fuel pump , i just put a new one in last month :(
K , now i left it to idle and it almost died but on its own gumtion stayed alive, but its spiting fuel out the exhaust, not alot, its like its mixed with water and gas, like the condensation spit after being left outside. Its so wierd. I am running out of ideas.
I'm not getting any check engine lights either.
Could it be my MAF ? or does my car use AFM ? it has the two wires in the middle, one up and down and one side to side. Is there any options for testing this part ? And are there upgrades to a more performance based maf like on the e28 m5 ?
TC535i 06-19-2007, 04:37 PM MAF is usually a round tube with a plug in the side. AFM is a box thing with a flap where the air goes in.
It really sounds like a bad air leak, a hose/wire not plugged in, bad idle control valve, etc. If you can't diagnose this stuff, you're honestly better off going to a shop...
I don't have any hoses or sensors disconnected, theres no leaking or dripping. The maf looks fine, dosn't look dirty, but with it having no thrown codes or anything to just say here is where i'm broken, i don't really know. That and right now i need to see this done myself, cause i spent 2000 bucks at a shop and after running the car a month this shit happens. Sorry but i don't trust right now, i wanna do it myself, with my hands, so i know whats being done and how its gunna or will work. You guys have years of experience on these cars, so i'm looking to you for help. Its my baby and im tired of seeing things go wrong after "professionals" work on them. Sorry just had to vent . Thanks so far guys i really appreciate it, any other ideas shoot em at me i'm all ears.
K after crawling under my car and making sure the lines and wires to the fuel pump were ok, i went to the fuse box again. FUSE 0 332 019 454 controls the fuel pump i'm assuming cause when it was plugged back in the car started and ran without hesitation. I had checked this fuse already, but after looking at it more i realized the fuse was really really loose, and everytime i started the car it just vibrated itself out. Gunna get a new one from the dealer tommorrow, or order one at least, and zip tie the mother down for now. Hopefully this will fix my moaning and bitching. Sorry for whining so much, thanks for your help guys.

Wait, what's wrong with a fuse that makes it loose? :confused
They just wedge in between the terminals, are those bent/missing/???
No the plug for my fuel relay is loose. I don't know why but its loose enough to let the plug vibrate out. that was my problem. Zip tied that shit down and "tested" the car to make sure the plug wouldn't come out under hard acceleration and hard g forces :) No problems so hopefully thats that :alright
