so.. the swap it's done. i have a big problem right now:
i don't have a vanos computer, or the plugs. the car had a m50 vanos, so i have the engine plug on the car, if that will fit.

what do i have to do, to install the vanos controller, and to make it work?
right now the car is working, but it's very slow under 4000rpm, and at 2500rpm has an hesitation.

is there a write-up with how to do this right?

thanks!

I hate to state the obvious, but you'll need a VANOS controller and the related wiring harness. What was in the car before has little to do with the fact that the new engine is missing its VANOS computer and the wiring.

I think that the wiring is in there.
I have a second connector, white color, in the DME compartment, smaller than the DME one. that is the vanos controller alright, but the other end where should it be?
should it be near the fusebox, the second circular plug?

this should be the reason why the car is pretty slow under 4000rpm?

thanks

i would say so. the vanos unit optimises cam timing at the bottom end of the revrange to make it drivable. My car has dual vanos, and can basically pull 6th gear at 1000rpm without any nasty shaking ect

I will try a vanos computer soon, and see if this will solve the problem.

but i don't know where does the other end of the wiring harness goes to, can somebody explain me, please ?

thanks

First,

I'm impressed that the 3.0 even runs without the vanos computer in place. Who'd have thunk it? Amazing.

Second, at least we are talking about a euro motor.

Third, I rather suspect that if the engine is running, even in its crippled fashion and you STILL have a round multipin connector not attached to anything, that you're looking at the diagnostic plug...and not a true "connector" that should be plugged into the car's harness.

This plug usually comes with a cap, but they can go missing, and I could imagine someone assuming it plugs into the car on a permanent basis.

I for one would never have tried to start the motor with the vanos plug missing a computer, AND if I thought the plug the size of a diagnostic port was important... but...well, whatever!

Good luck! (post a photo of what you need to identify, and you're likely to get immediate and accurate help)

welll, it seems that the round multipin connector is missing. at least I can't find it, dunno where it could be, because it's pretty big...

the car runs fine without it, a little high idle when it's cold, but after that it's ok. the only thing that made me check for a problem, is that on low rpm's it's pretty slow.

I guess that it will be a pita to re-create that roundel plug, and I don't know who can do this right...

Thanks for your help, M3 euro ltw!
