View Full Version : how "rare" is no sunroof? DYNAMIKE 06-16-2007, 08:10 PM ? wayfast 06-16-2007, 08:15 PM pretty rare DYNAMIKE 06-16-2007, 08:38 PM any weight difference? e21bimmer320i 06-16-2007, 09:08 PM not rare to me cuz i don't have one goinstrong 06-17-2007, 12:35 AM What year is your E21? e21bimmer320i 06-17-2007, 12:41 AM 78 kdanielson 06-17-2007, 01:01 AM Not terribly rare, I have one of each... '82 with, '78 without. It seems more early cars came without sunroofs. I prefer without. Yes there IS a weight difference, not sure what it is as I have not cut out all the sunroof parts and weighed them but I can tell you that the weight is in the absolute worst spot on the car. Most racing associations won't let you run with an operational sunroof-you must fill it in with a riveted or welded piece. ken DYNAMIKE 06-17-2007, 01:08 AM thanks, obi-won Hadrian 06-17-2007, 02:35 AM As rare as dog shit Rickysbmw320i 06-17-2007, 02:46 AM hmm, i thought haveing a sun-roof was alot more rare. I could never own a e21 with out a sunroof! -RIck DYNAMIKE 06-17-2007, 02:52 AM in cali you can get good use out of it. in rain land WA its bound to be a problem at some point. i also have model 60 ac conversion, take ac off roll down window and go 60 AlaskaBimmer 06-17-2007, 03:19 AM My 78 didn't have a sun roof, my 79 does, the Baur doesn't have a sunroof(I love the targa) and has more clearance than a no sunroof e-21 which is great at an auto-x on a rainy day.... pimpin.dre 06-17-2007, 03:26 AM nope, i havent got one. and of the few i've seen around the place, only about 2 have had them. Madhatter 06-17-2007, 03:27 AM man, you guys are weird. Ive owned a few E21's and none ever had a sunroof, on top of that i hadnt seen many around with them either. Now ive got one and i want another one with a sunroof :) The webasto one on the JPS has been in there since day dot and doesnt leak a drop :) DYNAMIKE 06-17-2007, 03:34 AM i have 2 with and 2 without, one i had before had sunroof and itseems about 90% i come across have sunroof in AlaskaBimmer 06-17-2007, 03:47 AM The reason why some of us want no sun roof cars is if your 6ft3 your head sits on the roof on a 320 with a sunroof, without one you gain a couple more inches headspace. DYNAMIKE 06-17-2007, 03:55 AM howd u know im 6 3 are u the chosen one? elias11 06-17-2007, 05:30 AM Both mine have sunroofs erzengel13 06-17-2007, 10:05 AM ...i also have model 60 ac conversion, take ac off roll down window and go 60 Gotta remember that one.... Like kdanielson said tho, some racing sanctions require you to "delete" the sunroof and weld in a new piece of sheet metal. Or you could be really persnikity about it and weld in a whole new oem non-sunroof sheet metal roof. I have only seen a handful of 320's without sunroofs. I personally could care less if it had one or not, but if it came down to it, I'd choose without. It's just one big whole in the structure with some added weight way above CG. Broly238 06-17-2007, 11:29 AM The reason why some of us want no sun roof cars is if your 6ft3 your head sits on the roof on a 320 with a sunroof, without one you gain a couple more inches headspace. I'm 6'4" and had no headroom problems, with a sun roof... :confused kdanielson 06-17-2007, 05:52 PM I'm 6'3" and haven't really had problems with sunroofs. My old '83 had one but the seat was so broken down I had plenty of room. My current '82 has one but I have aftermarket seats with fabricated mounts (removed the stock mounting humps) so I have plenty of room. My '78 daily driver does NOT have one with good stock seat and I fit well... I still prefer without a sunroof for the more rigid structure and weight savings alone. I don't like roasting in the sun much these days. ken AlaskaBimmer 06-17-2007, 10:48 PM It's not a head room issue for daily driving for me, but when I put on a helmet in the 79 I have to contort to wierd positions to get in there...in the Baur with the targa panel no issues or contorting with a helmet on.... Hadrian 06-18-2007, 03:09 AM My hair goes out the sunroof at speed e21enthusiast 06-18-2007, 03:15 AM then cut it.:) fabio Hadrian 06-18-2007, 06:23 AM Then I'll loose my mad skillz v8e21dreamer 06-19-2007, 05:23 AM Is a car with no sunroof more rigid than one with?I was wondering if the extra folds in the sheet metal on one with, might actually stiffen it up. |
