Damn you both! I would loved to have seen Rush last night. I haven't seen them live since the 80s. Presto was the last tour I saw. Grace Under Pressure and of course Moving Picture were better. Alas I am too young to have seen the 2112 tour. Well I guess I wouldn't have been too young, the album came out when I was 8. :buttrock
CDM5GO 06-14-2007, 03:14 PM Indeed! :redspot
I didn't have a chance to listen to much of the new album before the concert so I was quite impressed with the new material. The malignant narcissism tune was a highlight.

It was a great show...just to rub it in. My first Rush show was in 78/79 for the Hemishere album, I think. I was 10. I've seen at least one show on every tour since then. My wife rolls her eyes when she hears Rush is coming to town. She went to the Vapor Trails show with me but I think that will be the last time for her.

Doctor Wha 06-14-2007, 04:39 PM Okay Cliffs:
- Due to remarkable coincidence and fortunate timing, I turned into the parkng lot at Matt's shop from one direction, just as Neil Peart and his riding buddy/security guy were turning in from the other.
- Recognized and met the ever-elusive Professor (now you can really hate me!) :D
- Professor offered will-call comp tix to Matt's boss, but boss couldn't go. They figured that since I was enough of a fan that I recognized Peart with his helmet and shades on, I'd enjoy the show the most of all assembled. Will-call tix went to me.
- The next morning (day of the show), Boss says that Peart's buddy/bodyguard left a voice mail: They wanted new face shields for their helmets, and could we bring them to the show? "Deputized" as couriers of the shop, GP & I took custody of Peart's face shield for the next few hours, and went to the venue.
- Once at the venue, we went backstage to deliever the shields to the buddy/bodyguard. Happy he was, and handed us 6th-row center section comp tix, and Meet & Greet passes.
- Met Geddy & Alex, got pics taken with them.
- Watched the boys rock the house, 40 feet from the stage.
- Maximum ass-kickery enjoyed by all. :buttrock

Anyway, as I was saying... ;)
Right place, right time. Very cool. I'm even more jealous.
You aren't kidding. What was really bizarre is that everything before that moment at the shop, my entire day had been wrong. I was a full two hours behind schedule in all I had to do. Had my day gone "smoothly," I would never have been there right then. But all the delays and colossal screw-ups led to my turning into the parking lot at the exact second they did!
"Tricked by circumstances" can be a good thing! :D

Doctor Wha 06-15-2007, 09:04 PM Half the fun of this whole story is in the reactions people have...
My best friend since high school is a guy I recuited into the drum line "back in the day." He's a Rush fan as well, and we went to several concerts together in the (now departed) Omni. Since he moved to LA a few years ago, we talk on the phone occasionally, but don't see each other that much. So when he called this evening to say that he was in town for a short weekend visit with his family, it was a nice surprise.
I had called him briefly on Tuesday afternoon to tell him of the chance run-in at Matt's shop, but I haven't had time to tell him all that happened that evening, let alone Wednesday. When he called a while ago, he was in his (very strait-laced) brother's car, whose young son was in the back seat. My friend suggested we get together over the weekend, and I readily agreed...
"That'll be good," I said, "I can show you the picture of us meeting Geddy & Alex."
"You gotta be sh!ttin' me!!" he gasped, followed by a sudden flurry of agitated exclamations from elsewhere in the car. :complain
"Oh crap," he continued, "I forgot my nephew was in here!" :paranoid:
I can only imagine his brother's reaction when the kid no doubt picked up the "new words!" :rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl

I wanted to go to this concert, but couldn't get it into the schedule. I've been hauling my ass to every concert since p/g, maxing out at seeing th RTB tour 4 times and Presto 3. The R30 tour was probably the best, by far, however. Best opening act: Primus, by far. Worst: Mr. Big, also by far.
But yeah, Dave FM (:rolleyes) had a booth outside one of the entrances with Guitar Hero set up, letting people try to keep up with YYZ. :silly
They really ought to make GH 2 player Rush pack where the 2nd player gets to play the bass line. Give me Freewill (bonus for 2-player, if player 2 can play the bass solo part), La Villa Strangiato, Jacob's Lader (which is in alternating 6/8 and 7/8 time for you musicians), Xanadu, Driven, Virtuality, Vital Signs, and Leave That Thing Alone.
Probably one of my favorite pure guitar solos ever.
I've always loved YYZ, but La Villa Strangiato is my winner for favorite over all Rush tune.
BTW, if any of your Rush fans haven't gotten the R30 or Replay CD/DVD sets, they're sweet. Of course, I totally geeked out over the archive studio take of Strangiato.
Boozie D. Clown 06-19-2007, 05:09 PM I heard that Geddy Lee and Ric Ocasek used to get in knock-down, drag-out fights with the "ugly stick". Beat each other silly, rumour has it.

Interesting that you liked Primus. We were part of the other half of the Omni booing and shouting for them to GTFOff the stage. :rofl
Of course, on the Power Windows tour, Blue Oyster Cult was opening, so we had the bonus fun of seeing them play "Godzilla" live. That song is just pure goofy fun. :D

If you ever notice the names of the movements in the sheet music, you'll find one called "Danforth & Pape." Lots of people think they're names of people, but it's actually an intersection in the Greek section of Toronto. The last time we were up there, in addition to stopping at the Ontario Provincial Parliament building (the building on the Moving Pictures cover), we stopped at Danforth and Pape as well. Last but not least, the Hard Rock Cafe on Yonge Street (just a block or two down from Sam the Record Man) has one of Geddy's basses that he signed and gave to them.
I'll try to dig some pics up from the other computer tomorrow.

Even better is they closed the show with YYZ...I've never seen it live in 5 other shows.
Given the variety of music it was arguably their best show ever (that I've seen anyway). I don't have any album past Roll the Bones but I was grooving on some of the newer stuff. I'll probably pick up snakes and arrows. I picked up great seats in section 204 just behind the sound boards for $100 each off ebay. Really couldn't get much better except for the first few rows if you ask me.
I'm digging all the Guitar Hero convo. Perhaps I'll start a feeler thread for a GH gtg at my house sometime.

The only seats on ticketmaster in pairs were on the far sides of the 200 sections. Perhaps single seats were better or maybe they released more seats very close to the show.
I really can't get into most of the newer albums. I remember buying Roll the Bones and being somewhat disappointed so I never bought another one.

Yeah, it was probably the single-seat phenomenon that did it. :ponder
I really can't get into most of the newer albums. I remember buying Roll the Bones and being somewhat disappointed so I never bought another one.
I liked RTB a lot, but initially seemed to hit a wall with the material afterwards. Then, when revisiting it years later, I found that it was because the subject matter they covered - more "life stages" of interpersonal workings, marriage, etc. - were things I hadn't gone through to the depth of someone ~20 years older than me at the time. Now that I'm older, I find that material is actually some of my favorite work of theirs. I can still readily identify with the "p!ss & vinegar" ages of 2112, Moving Pictures, etc., but it's more from the standpoint of remembering my own days in that mindset (though musically, it remains as enjoyable as ever to listen to).
Meanwhile, the material from Counterparts, Test for Echo, and onward has become far more directly, personally relatable, simply because I've aged into it. Almost "caught up to it," in a way. I actually remember first listening to those two albums and thinking, "What the hell are they on about now?" :confused and leaving them on the shelf for a good long while. Then years later, upon giving the discs "another try," all of a suddlen, they made perfect sense!
Mark Twain perfectly summarised the experience this way:
"When I was a boy of fourteen, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But, when I got to be twenty-one, I was astonished at how much he had learned in seven years."
So I would say your reaction to that material probably isn't that unusual, and at some point, you may yet come around to enjoying it after all. :)
Was the chick with the big bazooms from the lead-in video there?
:lol:lol:lol
No, just a very good-natured newscaster who tolerated our sudden arrival in the background of his live shot with a healthy measure of grace and good humor (good thing he liked MINI Coopers!). :D
But I remember that girl quite fondly! She certainly "grew up" fast, didn't she? :devillook
I should alert you, however: The intro video for "Tom Sawyer" has been updated. I will say no more than that, but it is an absolute must-see! :alright
