View Full Version : After 35 years...finally going racing!!!
CKKrause 06-13-2007, 08:06 PM That's right...since I used to go with friends to the CanAm races at Laguna in the early 70's I've wanted to go racing... However, life and a couple of careers got in the way!! So, our kid is finally out of the house, I'm in a good spot with my career,(middle school principal), and, although I'm in old fart territory... I finally got my rookie racing license!!
The only bummer is that I'm fishing in Montana in July, so no Club Races until the end of October!! So look for me at T-Hill I'll be the big, bald guy asking lots of questions!!!

Welcome, I won't see you up there, but if you ever come to Socal (Button or Willow) look for me (see white car).
I also got my rookie license this year, but it's been only 25 years.

As I ask all racers-to-be, what type of annual budget are you envisioning?

As I ask all racers-to-be, what type of annual budget are you envisioning?
I don't call it a budget, it is a slush fund:)
rebel1 06-14-2007, 10:38 AM Think of a racing budget as a huge crack pipe. Actually, I think a crack budget would be slightly less.
CKKrause 06-14-2007, 11:15 AM jclmd81-
I have had a "Porsche fund" for years, but it pales along side the newer "Spec E36 fund"... Thank god my wife is understanding....
rebel1-
You nailed it, we are fishing the Madison, some spring creeks around Ennis, and the Encampment River further east... We've been going up there for 25 years...... Fly fishing is the only thing in life that I am reasonably competent at.....

ha ha, +1. let's see.....$3850 for used engine, $4000 for associated engine mods, $800-1000 for tires, $500+ for travel and lodging per weekend, and that's just for this first half of the year.

Ever fish the Ruby or Beaver head? The Beaver head has some hogs. I caught a 24" brown there last year up by the damn. Took me forever to land the sucker!
Sorry to hijack the post. Congrats on the racing!
vinnymac 06-14-2007, 11:25 AM Sweet!
I just started racing this year as well and I'm HOOKED.
35yrs...I guarantee you it will be worth the wait.
CKKrause 06-14-2007, 12:37 PM Bruce-
I fished the Ruby a couple of times and had some good luck... But the Beaverhead was fantastic! I've fished it 3 times about 5 miles north of Dillon and we hit a Bluewing Olive hatch each time... The hatch lasted about 1 1/2 hours each day and we caught about 10 fish each day. The smallest was 16 " and the largest was so big it flopped over both sides of my net!!! Big Fun!!!
We're going up a little early this year, about July 1st...
-Chuck
rebel1 06-14-2007, 01:25 PM We use to go out in August and are again this year. The earlier in the year the better the fish fight so we began to fish late June. No matter when you go there it's a great experience, period. Have fun! Perhaps we'll meet out there one day.

HA HA HA :lol That's why I got out of IP!! you're talking NOTHING compared to what a competitive IP car costs these days...
So glad I sold the IP car and am now doing Spec E36. My car just turned 120,000 miles during qualifying at the Lime Rock race and is still running pretty darn strong! :redspot :buttrock And who cares if it doesn't - I can pick up another 2.5 m50 for $500 at any junk yard.... :alright
CKKrause 06-14-2007, 02:17 PM HA HA HA :lol

Jim Bassett 06-14-2007, 03:03 PM Let me add my belated "Welcome" as well.
See you at THill in Oct!
S.Lang 06-14-2007, 04:53 PM Fishing? Pfffttt....who misses races to go fishing? :devillook
CKKrause 06-14-2007, 05:10 PM Scott-
I've been happily married for 33 years because I learned when to hold and when to fold... She asked me to fold (I was going to go to WS on 7/7-8), so I folded.... She throws a very good line herself!!!
Jim-
Thanks and thanks again for lesson on the turn 2 & 10 lines at Infineon...

phredden 06-14-2007, 10:43 PM CK, you sound a lot like me....fooling around on the sidelines for a long time, since the late '60s doing time trials, hill climbs, autocross, track days, then finally bit the bullet! We built a SpecE36 as well, and had our debut at Lime Rock last week. We're looking forward to a great class and great racing, and hope you venture out east some day!
CKKrause 06-15-2007, 12:25 AM Phredden-
Sounds quite similar...except I didn't get on a track until about 2003! I'm looking forward to Spec E36 as well.... I occasionally visit a friend in Boston, so I'll look you up next time I'm out there...
-CKKrause
mijgilbert 06-15-2007, 05:54 AM We get a "beer & track" event going here a few times a year - sort of a social event of all the racer buddies in the Boston area. Make sure you let us know when you'll be out here and we'll get the band together...

CK, don't take my random ramblings to heart. Jim's laughing at me because he probably knows I missed Buttonwillow last weekend because I was in the Sierras......fishing...;)
CKKrause 06-15-2007, 11:34 AM I remember seeing that... Unfortunately, I have more fishing than driving talent.....
