View Full Version : Is it just me or do CT drivers suck?

I'm 20, lived in Chicago until I went to college at RPI in upstate NY, and I've been living in CT since January working for GE in Shelton, CT. I must say, some of the drivers in CT really just annoy me.

Perfect example. Now, I've always been taught to pull out into the middle of the intersection when making a left turn so that you are ready to make the turn if there isnt traffic coming or so that you and the car behind you can make the turn when the light turns yellow and before the other light turns green.

I'm sitting at an intersection right by Sikorsky on 110 in which its so long 3 cars can pull into the intersection to make the turn. I see the guy pull out into the intersection and I'm like "yes! someone finally knows what to do!" (of course the guy behind him/in front of me stays behind the pedestrian cross walk line even though there is room for him to pull into the intersection). Get this.... the guy in the middle of the intersection does *not* turn after the light turned yellow! He just sat there blocking the intersection for the other side.

I'm sure I'm preaching to the choir here about bad drivers, but seriously now? Do you need to take a drivers ed class to get your license here in CT? haha

No, they are actually very good drivers compared to most places. They just drive a little fast but I'm ok with that. Try driving in NYC or Boston. But the worst is South Florida, I lived there for three years and thought I was going to kill myself.

And you do not need to take driver's ed in CT but if you don't then you have to wait 2 more months to get your license, at least that is how it was when I got mine.

No, not all CT drivers. Just Stratford and Shelton drivers. :stickoutt

And that intersection is always problematic because: a) Sikorsky and Warner Hill road each get their own green lights, meaning everyone's red light is just a little bit longer than usual; b) when turning right onto 110 south, people go wide around the corner to avoid bottoming out; c)there's also a no turn on red when coming from Warner Hill, although most people ignore this.

In fact, the whole stretch of 110 from Warner Hill down to the Merritt Parkway is just plain an annoying stretch of road. Darn convenient for Milford commutes to Shelton Corporate Towers, though.

I'm a ct driver and we're a pretty good set of drivers. Maybe that area you're in, but not the entire ct. In ct we do drive a little faster than most states and that is because most of our time is spent in traffic at least for the folks in lower fairfield county (I live in norwalk, so it just a parking lot). Once the road opens up ct drivers usually floor the pedal to metal. Plus we're probably one of better drivers when it comes to snow.

CT drivers suck, NY drivers suck, NJ drivers suck, RI drivers suck, MA drivers suck!!!!!!!

Cell phones stuck in their ears, doing makeup in the rear view, dew rags down over their eyes, bent down looking under the seat to pick up the CDs, eating breakfast/lunch/dinner, randomly zigzagging across traffic and by God don't ever signal a turn or leave the left lane for any reason, no matter how many cars are stacked up behind you!!!!

I swear the cars in New York/New England have ratcheting steering wheels. They can turn left to get into the fast lane, but they are completely incapable of gettiing back out of the fast lane.

It is a typical urban, I don't give a shit about what anybody else is doing, I'm just gonna do whatever I want and everybody else can get screwed attitude!!!

How's that?

Rant mode = off

It's just you. There's a few that suck, but those are the ones that moved here from RI, MA, NY, FL, etc...

CT drivers definately do suck, and even my friends that have lived in CT their whole lives tell me that.

Yes, every state seems to have its own quirks to its drivers...

CT : people cannot merge in or out of traffic to save their lives, create traffic jams for no apparent reason
NY : dont even know the right lane exists
MD : cannot read road signs without causing a 10 mile traffic jam
FL : drive with blinkers on, then turn them off when actually changing lanes

ect ect ect... :D

Nj is the worst of all states. First for all the money they charge why are the roads filled with pot-holes. 280 sucks, 78 sucks, 80 sucks, turnpike and GS parkway sucks. Second, why does it take almost an 1 1/2 to reach GW or lincoln tunnel when there are no accidents or police activities. I hate driving in new jersey. Always traffic. I can drive to boston faster than i can drive to new jersey. It takes me 2 1/2 hours to get to new jersey from ct, and i'm at the very begining of ct. When i stay in the city with my parents it takes 1 1/2 hour and they live in the village. Terrible drivers who never look where they're going, and when it rains or snow--the state goes into state of emergency. If you think i'm lying, remember april showers 07-access to 280 from the 1&9 was flooded for a month--what's up with that? Don't all the $$$ i pay for nj taxes provided and ensure decent roads.

I hate to say it but CT drivers do suck. But you deal/live with it. People stay in the left lane for way too long, I agree with that. But I feel that since I am driving the M3 more often people move over as they see me compared to the mazda protege5.

A perfect example of this, Monday I drove from greenwich to colchester to visit a friend. I was on the merrit no longer then 25 mins when some lady in a mid 90's corolla merged got onto the highway. She got onto the highway, didnt really look to see how fast I was approaching her from a distance and directly went into the left lane (which I was on) and did not speed up but was going at a whooping 50 (max id say). There was a car next to her so I couldnt exactly weave around. And its stupid things like this that make CT drivers ass hats.

Not all are bad just 3/4th.

Haha I went to school in Fairfield for the last four years .. and yes.. CT drivers suck. Although, I will limit that down and say CT drivers in and near fairfield county suck .. apparently outside of there they are okay.
However.. with the exception of a lot of them just being stupid in general and driving monstrous (unnecessarily large) suvs, I think the biggest problem is that they drive to slow and cautiously. Im more used to stupid young drivers, so ive grown to prefer driving around that than the confused soccer moms of the area

That is SOOOOOO true! Getting onto the Merritt from 95 and vice versa is quite possibly the most confusing/frustrating experience ever. It can be all backed up and then 10 seconds later, you're going 80 mph.

We have to exclude the merrit from this argument for the simple reason that the merritt has two problems: 1) design flaws, and 2) location. The merrit was design poorly with the regards to mergers and lane departures. There's very little room to merge in to traffic which causes terrible back-ups because there are only two lanes once the left if back-up there's really no where to go. The merrit was built as a highway for its time and not the future. Back then, there wasn't that many cars on the road compare to now so the design is useless and ineffective. Second, the location is wonderful, but not pratical. Once again Merrit reflects a design of its time. Not that many cars, for which many people back then drove the merrit as lesiurely drive not a freeway. With the addition of massive population growth and suburbs the present location is just flawed. Don't get me wrong i love drive on the Merrit, especially closer to Greenwich with those nice long curves, but it's more of hassle than pleasure. Furthermore, there should never be highway stuck dead in the middle of the woods. I hate driving the merrit at nite-TOO MANY DEERS. The problem with lower fairfield county communities and towns were built first, for which there were no thoughts on how manage the flow of people. Unlike upper ct where the roads are extremely big, we're stuck with 95--a parking lot and the merrit for which too many people on small roads that lead to bad drivers causing most head-aches. Let's face it, there are bad drivers everywhere, unlike most modern states were bad drivers are regulated to the right lane ct cannot offer that. Try driving in Costa rica, you'll praise ct drivers.

I've gotta say most of them suck, but there's nothing better than being cut off by a BMW or similar car. :D

Second, why does it take almost an 1 1/2 to reach GW or lincoln tunnel when there are no accidents or police activities. I hate driving in new jersey. Always traffic. Couldnt tell ya, I wonder the same thing when Im on I-95 in CT and cant figure out why where is a traffic jam every 5 miles when there are no accidents or anything.

I can drive to boston faster than i can drive to new jersey. It takes me 2 1/2 hours to get to new jersey from ct, and i'm at the very begining of ct. When i stay in the city with my parents it takes 1 1/2 hour and they live in the village. Well, personally its taken me half the time to drive TO new jersey than its taken me to drive TO connecticut, so it seems like we have exactly opposite opinions or driving schedules.

Terrible drivers who never look where they're going, and when it rains or snow--the state goes into state of emergency. If you think i'm lying, remember april showers 07-access to 280 from the 1&9 was flooded for a month--what's up with that? I doubt it was flooded for a month, but since I dont go up there I could care less either way, and no, it doesnt go into a state of emergency whenever it rains or snows, so stop with the nonsense.

Don't all the $$$ i pay for nj taxes provided and ensure decent roads.Have you driven anywhere in NY lately? Fucking pothoes are bigger than my damn Toyota

So True!! 95 backed up for no reason. Always traffic between exits 6-15, when u get there maybe a total of 5 cars exit! I think the signs that read delays ahead already put drivers in slow mode. Dello you are100% correct about the Merrit pkwy.

I think the signs that read delays ahead already put drivers in slow mode.

thats exactly what happens in Maryland with the signs that go over the highways.

Heck, the signs could have "Sign Test" written on them, and people will create a traffic jam just cause they (for some reason) feel the need to slow down to read it.... I dont get it.

Either way you slice it, every states drivers have their quirks or issues, theres no way around it, just gonna deal with it and hope nobody hits you, lol.

Hey, stop generalizing. The CT drivers outside of Greenwich county are great drivers. It's not my fault that only about 100 people in CT live outside of that county. :shifty

I guess you don't drive in northern jersey alot-there's alot of problems with the roads up-and yes it was flooded for a month-there are people still waitng for insurance checks from the april flash floods. 280 leading to 1&9 was close from harrision to jersey city for a month, and you either had to detour on the turnpike or go the back roads to arlington and cut into newark. How do i know, i drive these roads everyday. New york has bad roads, but have you've taken the pulaksi highway-it's a mess. I stop taking that road because several blow-outs i had. Drive in newark my freind and you will find more shitty roads than ny.

Greenwich county eh . . . I guess my pressence at meets wont go to well :(.

But I do agree fairfield is the suck with driving.

And Dello I agree with you about the merrit, it is an awesome place to drive I think it is one of the ebst highways I have driven to date. Granted that could all change but the twisties are awesome. I sometimes get on the merrit just to cruise.
