so today i purchased a snazzy little white 528e for 900 bucks. body is in great shape, interior is a little ratty, but hey it goes, stops and turns...5th bmw i've bought in 11 months and im only 19...i think i have the sickness.

anyhow the car is a joy to drive, i was very suprised after driving my e36 m3 and various 2002's how nice this thing handles. not to mention it looks so damn cool. yes, the "e" stands for uber slow i think but i don't care.

ok so my question, this thing idles to high to begin with (a hair over 1,000 rpm). But when it as at an unloaded idle (P, N or coasting) it will surge from about 1000 rpm to around 2,500. which requires me to ride my brakes so as to maintain 25mph around town. when i'm on the power it is 5 series smooth.

any ideas?

thank you gentleman...
george

Sounds like a vacuum leak. I had a vacuum leak where the ICV's hose connects to the intake boot. I see in your sig that your e28 is an 87? If so, there aren't many places for it to leak. Look over all your vacuum hoses.
