Yeah, especially with the low exchange rate now, you can get a 328i in the US for the price of a 323i here. Kinda sucks when you also have to pay double the tax. f#$%ing GST.

Why is everyone leasing? I did a purchase but was wondering. If you check the AAA website they offer a discount on BMW's, and will supply the dealer in your area. It saved me 2600 off the price of my new 335xi.

I don't remember all the details but here are the highlights of the lease:

2007 328 coupe
negotiated price: $35K
down payment : $2K (about $4K due at signing)
3 years / 45K miles
payment: $455/month

Why is everyone leasing?

Lower monthly payment (almost 1/2), at least that is my main reason. And I can still buy it out at end of lease for lower than market value based on residual, or if I get rich all of a sudden, return it without much hassle for a new 350 maybe (yeah could have in 3 years lol).

The dealer told me that 80% of their clients lease... I have no idea if that statistic is true.

Leasing make sense for lots of people and you can write more of it off than you could in a traditional purchase.

It is overused but with a lease you really are only paying for the portion of the car you are going to use. If I get a traditional loan then sell the car in three years for $30,000, all else being equal, I have paid interest on that $30,000 for three years. With a lease I have not paid that plus I eliminated the risk and hassle of trying to sell in three years. Oversimplified but i think it is valid. Plus if BMW wants to sell more cars, they don't discount the price or offer rebates, they structure lease deals with below market money factors or high residual values.

my terms were $43000 for 328i sedan in Dallas, TX. Car is loaded with about all you can get on it, so that's why higher price. I also financed TT&L since I could. They took off $1800 as well from MSRP.
36 mo
$2000 down (to pay for TT&L really)
$600 month exactly

Not entirely true. While you do only pay for the portion of the “car” that you will be using (the “residual” component of the lease payment), you pay interest on the entire purchase price (the “MF/interest” component of the lease payment). That being said, still much cheaper on a monthly basis than traditional financing.

Chris Jergusson was internet sales manager that helped me out. I have never met and did everything through email. It was simple, painless, and he was and still is so helpful. That makes all the difference in the world when dealing with people like him, esp if there are problems with car in future. Also, my car went into production immediately and will have within approx 5 weeks of ordering!!!

Holy Cow! Thatz awesome. I just placed the order yesterday for a black saph w/ beige. I am working with Rick. I agree to your point on painless buying. I was shopping around for cars for more than a month. I was in and out in less than 30 minutes coz i exactly knew what I want and for how much.

He told me it would be around end of July to get mine but I hope I might get it sooner.

Autobahn Motors in Ft.Worth gave me the best deal and has the best website for browsing real time inventory. I agree - Classic was not too helpful even though I leased my previous BMW through them and although BMW of Dallas was willing to work with me they did not ever seem to have any coupes in stock - only sedans and verts.

They initially estimated my payment to be $800/mo on a 12k lease, to which I laughed in their face. I eventually got them down around $600 after all was said and done. Hopefully it will be better in a month or two when the car comes in but the rates are high on sedans now.

As to why lease? Cars are a horrible investment, the less money you put into it the better. Think about it, if you bought the thing outright you could sell it in four years and earn 50 cents on the dollar. If you finance it and pay part of it off, you might get some equity but it shrinks in the same manner. The only way it makes sense is if you're going to keep the car for a long time, pass it down, etc. Otherwise that extra money you'd be putting into a finance can be gaining equity somewhere else, not getting smaller and smaller in a depreciating vehicle.

Look at it this way, with my 36 mo lease, I save roughly $1064/mo compared to a 36 mo finance. If I put that money in my sock drawer, I'd have a little over 38k at the end of the lease, more if I invested it. If I instead financed, I'd own a car worth roughly $34k at the end of the three years. If I'm going to keep the car then it'll be nice not having a payment and the value is greater there, but if I sell the car or trade it in I've lost at least $4k on the deal (much more if I trade in) by financing instead of leasing, because what I've put into the car has depreciated.
