Im having a little problem, on the mornings or when the car has been off for a while, and I turn it on, for a few minutes (until the normal operational temp is achieved) the car feels a little weird.... when I slowly accelerate, sometimes there is a sound like an F1 traction control when its activated, have you seen the F1 races ? sounds like an electrical limit on the sparkplugs or something, and a sudden loss of power is detected, that goes away as soon as the engine has warmed up, what could it be ?

:help

strange.

my educated guess is that a sensor or an earth is not making proper contact when cold, and with it heating up the expansion in the metal restores the electrical connection. does it do similar if u hit a bump in the road??

nope, only on cold starts :(

Well, since the car isn't getting spark(that's how traction controls work), i'd start by troubleshooting the ignition system. Perhaps a bad plug or coilpack could be the culprit and an easy fix.

mine does a slight missfire while idling on cold-starts, idles at around 1200rpm
then after 5mins or so goes down to ~880rpm and idles smoothly

Have you checked for codes? Misfires, bad knock sensors, etc? The US engines had knock sensor issues that would cause the DME to pull timing right around 3k when accelerating slowly, and my first guess is a bad knock sensor.

ill do a scan next monday, I hope it wont be too much of a problem.

I was guessing a bad coil.... but only when cold ? mmm

it's clear that your car is a dud...sell it to me in the states

another guess....... could it be the ECU retarding the timing because of bad gasoline ? gasoline down here its crap, the best one does not reach 90 octanes...

Ok, now that ive installed my eisenman race, this "F1 traction control sound" is becoming unbearable, its not worse, its just louder now, so its more noticeable.... and I havent been able to take the car to the stealership yet :(

Sounds like a lean misfire on a cold start. Cold starts need a richer mixture, so lean mixtures will easily misfire, and if it happens at something like 2k+ RPMs it'll definitely give you that F1 TC sound(that sounds like ass BTW, so I'm sure it's annoying).

Doesn't sound like the DME pulling timing, sounds like a genuine misfire if you notice a huge drop in power under light acceleration(i.e. it's making almost no power with the misfires).

My US E36 M3(S52) feels like it runs right on the edge of a lean misfire on a cold start, but it's generally well behaved enough to drive it immediately after a start. My Nissan which I tuned myself actually drives better on a cold start.. haha

Well, my car is in the stealership, since today in the morning, a few minutes ago I got a phone call from them, they say that theres nothing wrong, all sensors are ok, no error codes, they took it for a test drive and felt nothing wrong, the car pulls hard, and theres no power loss at any RPMs..... theyll let the engine cool down and try again.... now im confused :confused

IMHO, they all miss a bit between dead cold and hot.
My car with standard ECU and aircleaner does it but is MUCH better than my son's with CAI and chip.
When warming the engine does not read the O2 sensors until fully warmed, so it is running from the ECU map. The map is a bit lean on warm up IMHO. This is exacerbated by CAI and chip.
Fuel formulation may also affect this, and it may be that modern lower volatility fuels cause the problem, considering the ECU was mapped in 92 or thereabouts.
My son has replaced MAF, O2 sensors, plugs, coils, and it still does it. There are no codes . His also starts to stumble a bit on light throttle on cold/wet days. It is better since the new O 2 sensors but still has a stumble.
Mine is perfect when warm.
IMHO it is a characteristic of the beast.

mine does it as well

Interesting Philip, thanks

I went yesterday and took it for a test drive with the BMW mechanic on my passengers seat, the car performed beautifully, no hesitation, no power loss.... so what the heck ? They say they did not do anything to the car, just ran the scanner and checked the sparkplugs....
