View Full Version : E46 M3 crank pulley upgrade or undersrive pulley kit?
ajfox 06-04-2007, 04:38 PM I'm debating whether I should go with the E46 M3 crank pulley (cheaper) or just keep my evosport euro specific pulleys. My dilemma is that I have a UUC Stage 2 flywheel/M5 clutch kit & I've heard the horror stories about crank pulleys throwing off the engine balancer & etc. Does anyone know if this same theory applies to the euro engine (S50B30) or have any specific info. I should know to help me decide which to choose :help
liquidtension 06-04-2007, 04:54 PM Alan has the E46 m3 crank pulley on his S50B30.. hopefully he'll pitch in on the subject
morerevsm3 06-04-2007, 05:42 PM I only fitted crank pulley a few days ago, also have UUC stage 2 flywheel, so far so good. with our setup, balancer remains so is not same issue as US spec, as of 6 months ago, eurosport did not have pulley to fit euro waterpump, so check before starting that one

So you're saying that the euro engine is not prone to the same harmonic balancer issues as the U.S. s50-s52 when combined with a LTW flywheel & that is safe for me to run the e46 crank pulley with my UUC LTW flywheel?
Evosport started producing (http://www.evosport.com/product/proddetail.aspx?partnum=EVO.PER.B36.P05) a euro specific under drive pulley kit for the euro engines.

I've been told it will be too much underdrive if I combine the E46 crank pulley and evosport pulleys...but fuck it...I'm gonna try both! :buttrock
M3 Euro LTW 06-09-2007, 02:37 PM You can run them all at once.

When I deleted my PS, and went with EPS, I think I found that I NEEDED to have a larger pulley on the alternator to clear the tensioner with the new direct route of the belt up to the alternator.
It was darn close. I'm not positive to be honest that it even did clear, I may well have gone with a smaller alternator and custom mount to make it clear.
The next version of the engine deleted the WP as well, and moved the alternator to the back seat to allow for DS pump in its place.
When I ditched the DS system, I found that my engine ran best with no pulleys. Very clean look, with minimal parisitic losses. I miss that look, as I've gone back to one simple belt for the tiny alternator only, its a mini-one, and I used the tensioning system from the old E30's to eliminate the factory tensioner as well, which is not all that good to begin with anyway.
The HB was fine in all these variations.
I'll try to post some images of this as well.

Vitolo 06-09-2007, 02:54 PM I upgraded to the S54 crank pulley on my S50B32. During the swap I compared the pulley to the US S52 crank pulley and stock S50B32 pulley. The US one has a rubber harmonic dampener in the center whereas the S54 and Euro did not. I beleive the HD in the Euro/S54 is internal. There was a significant visual difference in size between the Euro/S54 pulleys.
It bolts right up, I scored one off ebay for about $30.
I played with belt sizes to get ones that work. The stock euro serpentine belt (6pk1515mm) worked fine, but please note I also have a US-spec alternator and don't know the size difference between it and a euro version.
As for the A/C belt, I used a 5pk875mm but I have a US AC compressor that is larger than the euro compressor as well as the emissions pump deleted so YMMV.

So, you don't see it as being to much underdriving for a street/track car to run both a crank & pulley kit? Any major effects from it that I should be aware off?
