View Full Version : Got pulled over today (kinda long)
yod88 05-29-2007, 02:07 AM memorial day weekend woes...
me and my buddy went to the Mt. Holyoke Summit this afternoon to take some pics on top of the mountain..and on the way back home we were next to the Mt. Holyoke school, and a cop sees me drive by after i stopped at a stop sign..pulls out to pull me over, i immediately pulled out my wallet to get the lisense ready..the lights flash, i pull over (wondering what this stop could possibly be for)
he comes up to the car take the lisense + registration, then goes back to his car, comes back a few minutes later then says i pulled you over because you have no front plate (i have not ran a front plate since a month after i bought the car almost 2 years ago)..i said i needed to get a bracket for the plate that i had to replace, but will put it back on..he walks to the front and says theres no place on the bumper that shows it was mounted before..i explain the whole moulding strip to him and he says ok..goes back to his car and comes back with a written warning and says i know all you guys with nicer cars dont want to run front plates because it doesnt look good..but it is the law so i would fix that in a timely fashion..but you are now in the system saying you got this warning, so if you get pulled over again for this, then you will most likely get a $35 dollar ticket
are these $35 dollar tickets just fix it tickets, or do they have more damage behind them? ive never had a problem with the plate in boston, west springfield, springfield, westfield, amherst, CT, RI..basically every where i drive..the one day i drive in holyoke i get pulled for it :mad
i dont want to put the plate back on, but also dont want to deal with cops trying to fill any quotas and trying to attach speeding or anything onto the no front plate..
anyone have any similar experiences? and anyone know how long these warnings stay on record so i know when it wont show that i have had this problem before?
strong dislike for MA autolaws..including inspection :stickoutt
marcusj325is 05-29-2007, 09:34 AM that sucks, it's happened to a couple of friends of mine.........gotta love those piggies

welcome to the club:(
540doug 05-29-2007, 02:00 PM i think your missing the big picture here. i do run a front plate for one reaseon only. (besides it being the law) . not having it gives the police a reason to pull you over at any time to give you greif. and it will most likely be the worst time they possible could pull you over. after a cookout where said driver may have had a beer or two( i know nobody on this site has ever driven after having a few drinks.)etc etc. point is run the plate and lose a reason to get nixed
540doug 05-29-2007, 02:30 PM just my 2 cents. ^^^
savage217 05-29-2007, 04:14 PM I got pulled over for not having one in ashland. I wonder if written warnings really do get put into the computer. That would suck because I have two. Does anyone know if they really do get entered in?
540doug 05-29-2007, 05:50 PM my best friend is a state trooper in ma. yes. the warnings are enetered. but they do not show up that often from town to town. if you get pulled over in the same town they wil have a record. fortunately they are usuall very backed up with paper work so it would take a while and the officer would have to look for it.
savage217 05-29-2007, 06:39 PM I meant does it show up in the computer like when they check your record.

I was trying to figure out the cleanest way to attach a front plate to the gt4 I just bought. I hate the idea of being pulled over and was not sure if the ticket for no front plate would count as a moving violation. While trying to figure out what potential ticket I was in for I surfed the MA RMV website and found that I can order a replacement front plate for $10. The RMV issues you a piece of paper which is ok for inspections and in the case you get pulled over for no front plate. This paper is issued in 4-5 days from when you place the replacement plate order. The replacement plates take 8-10 wks to get made and sent to your house. $30. a driving season to stay legal and have no worries about $$$ violations or my insurance going up is WELL WORTH it IMHO.
raydoc 05-30-2007, 05:59 PM If you park on the street in Boston with no front plate (and have red/white/blue plates) watch out. They have teams that drive down streets with video cameras that scan plates and run them. If no front plate, they will ticket you. People scam the system using one plate on one car and the other on another unregistered one.
If you don't pay the ticket, you can't renew your license or registration so you'll likely pay it.

m3saloon 05-30-2007, 08:39 PM i've been baged for no front plate. its really bull... I've herd (now if someone is the law feel free to correct me) but the Main reason its a law to have them in MA is so that its easyer to radar/lazer cars with a plate. I had my plate in my front window and i STILL got harrased for it.
i very much dislike MA trafic laws.
it IS a moving violation to not have one. so that 35buck ticket is followin you for 7 years. complete crap.
With all due respect to law enforcement i admire what you do every day. but honestly when your on trafic duty or "click-it or ticket" it really pisses me off.
i pay 3K a year for ins on my E36, and all because i have 4 speeding tickets (all with in 15 mph of the speedlimit), numorous no front plate, 3 -4 failure to inspect (one being i was driving to the damn inspection station) and 1 seat belt violation. so ya i'm now a "HIGH RISK" driver b/c you know i'm SO dangerous with out a front plate.
sorry its long guess i needed to vent a little
yod88 05-30-2007, 11:29 PM im thinking to ziptie the plate to the front mesh..i dont know if the plate will fit properly but its worth a try..
anyone know if this is not a good idea because the fan/radiator is behind the mesh, and in a sense im putting a wall in front of them?
m3saloon 05-30-2007, 11:52 PM haha take a drill and put a THOUSAND holes in it so the air will pass haha see if the cops like that
just be like "ofcr i hit a porcupine last week, but i managed to get my front plate back on"
Billan 05-31-2007, 12:01 AM I was pulled over on 91 for my car not having a front plate. It is a moving violation so I had to go to court and fight it. If you put a plate on and take some pictures they will drop the ticket. I run front plates on all my cars now because it was not the first time they pulled me over exclusively for this.
I had the plate zip tied to the front of my last E46 M3 without any issues. I think it looked a lot better than a bracket.

If your going to do it just drill two holes in the center of the BMW piece so that the top holes of the license plate will mount to it. I did this and it looks and works great. I was also trying to find other ways of mounting but none of them looked good. They looked either cheap or just bad. Ive heard some people run their front plates on their dash. Not sure if this legal but supposedly it is:shifty
S52OnYourSix 05-31-2007, 09:51 AM Ive been pulled over a couple times for this, I leave my plate on now just so i dont get hastled

well i have the proper bmw plate strip that has holes in it for the plate to be mounted..but im thinking ziptie is easier because i can take it off for pics or meets, and ziptie it back on
allen201 05-31-2007, 07:57 PM Would it make you feel better if you were running a euro-style plate instead of a US style plate?
Laws may be different in your state, but here you can run a euro-plate in the front as long as the numbers match. There's an E46 325xi at my building that runs a euro plate on the front.
Bolidoendiablad 05-31-2007, 08:02 PM We can talk for hours and days about it, but at this point I don't think there's any possible solution for us other than just swallow the goddam MA driving laws and put the plate where it goes.
Again, I do appreciate law enforcement, of course, but c'mon, not having a front plate is in no way dangerous or excuse enough to pull someone over. Somebody is being assaulted or murdered at the same time they pull you over for this stupid reason. Furthermore, is stupid and not equally applied to every MA resident driver: If you happen to be a lucky bastard owning an old green plate, even though you can't not read one number out of it because is faded, you can get away with it!!!!
You just don't need to have a front plate!!!!!:mad
Unfortunately most of this people drives an olde crown victoria or cutlass or some sort of boat like those with a 3 ton steel bumper beautifully molded to have a front plate.
sorry I guess I needed to vent a little too
yod88 05-31-2007, 08:09 PM i was leaving the west springfield dealership..and went to take the U-turn, there was a local cop on the other side of the intersection..clearly had his eye on me..easily could have seen i have no plate, i did the U-turn, showing that i have white/red plates, and he drove right by me when his light turned green..
i feel like it depends greatly on the town/city you are in whether or not cops will hassle someone about the plate..
i have no reason to normally go to holyoke..and hadnt gone there in the whole time i had no plate except for last monday, and seems to me like the town enforcement doesnt care in my town, where it does in holyoke?

;)
At least the drive up the mountain was fun, eh? This kinda cancels my desire to take my front plate bracket off.

Are you sure that's legal? I might look into that if it is....

At the behest of Massoud and Lida?
yod88 06-01-2007, 02:59 AM naw..but they'd prefer me having a plate :stickoutt
seriously though..i never had a problem with local cops or staties in our town..if we took just your car to the mountain then this wouldnt be an issue :D
jjgbmw323 06-03-2007, 01:06 AM Hmm. A while back, there was a thread about people saying that there front plate fell off, calling the registry and having them send out the paperwork on it.
It took a while for the registry to remake the plate and they sent you the documention saying it was ok to have one plate.
Not to sure how good this strategy works if every summer you loose your front plate.
I am going for antique plates, but I still dont want the front license plate on my 323i. I am going to see If I can zip tie on to the front and take it off for shows.....

i hear ya
right now the plate is on..the correct way :(
on the bumper there wasnt enough room to completely attach the plate by zip ties..cars goin in storage for a year come august..so i figure until then its allright to keep the plate..but i carry a screw driver, and the delete strip with me incase i need to take the plate off for pics :stickoutt
