so I'm thinking I could use a GPS unit. I currently have an indash dvd player with video-in and whatnot. what i want is a unit that will output the video, and possibly audio, to my HU. i'm pretty sure these exists and could use your suggestions! the cheaper the better!

I'm not sure about the audio/video output part of it. Are you looking for a portable type unit that can be removed when you'd like to?
If so, I will recommend Garmin hands down over Magellan, Tomtom, LG, etc. I've used all of them and will never use another brand. The software and screen are just that much better.

it doesn't have to be removable. i have a small garmin i use for when i'm hiking/mountain climbing that performs that function very well. i'd prefer a unit with video out so i don't have everything so cluttered, ya know? just have everything going to my current screen

Totally understand. Good luck. Let us know if you find anything that fits the bill - I'm curious now too!

that looks like it might be what i'm looking for but, at 650 bucks, a little more than i wanted to spend. i was hoping since i didnt want the screen, it might be cheaper :)
any other leads are appreciated!

Pyle makes a GPS with a video output. You can find them on e-bay for about $400. I don't know how the unit compares with the Garmin ones which are usually very good. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/NEW-2007-PYLE-GPS-NAVIGATION-SYSTEM-UNIVERSAL-CAR-NAVI_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ38653QQihZ008QQite mZ180119671618QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW
is a link I just saw.
Also, the Alpine Blackbird is a portable unit that can link with an Alpine head unit to display the GPS info.

:)Sony GPS. I used it for the trip to the Tail of the Dragon run and it was 100% accurate.
as the sign on the side of the road said 3000 ft, the GPS was 3000 ft. vering off course, it quickly corrected the route and put us back on course. window mount, hand-held, it was awesome. one of the other cars had an Alpine in-dash unit and it was off by 100-200 feet.
Sony was 100%, 100% of the time. :)
