Not sure how wide spread it is, but while I was down this weekend got tagged with Laser by some of the locals (non chp). Laser is fairly new up here just for CHP (less than a year since they staretd their big laser campaign), but just thought I would give everyone a warning if its not big there yet. It was in the Carmel Valley/PQ area (off camino del sur). Thank god I wasn't paying attention, and was thankfully NOT speeding :D

SD PD has been running Laser for about 2 years at a minimum. From what I've seen in the speed 'trap' on Sorrento Valley Rd right outside my work.

Yep. Everyone in SD needs laser shifters or laser jammers. :D

Isn't it usually too late if the V1 picks it up?
So you mean I can't pass off the Laser alarm as the "Murano/FX35/Trailblazer finder" anymore?

i have a V1, however it does nothing against laser.. other than tell you you're screwed, and they already got your speed reading.

I've got one, but I've actually had it in the glovebox for a few weeks now. I mean, I like it and all, sure, but the ratio of how often it alerts me to a speed trap vs. how often it goes nuts because there is a mall or a supermarket or a military plane in the air nearby (seriously!) is too small to make it a clear advantage.

And yea the laser thing has gone off quite a few times actually, only in the past maybe 9 mos though, but in any case when it has gone off - so what? I look around wondering if that was a laser gun or someone's LCD brake lights or strobes from an ambulance ... and I could never tell, not once. Never saw a cop after it went off, or anything else of note. So I don't know what it does for me. :dunno

there are ways to disable the x band and k band i believe

XOC
05-28-2007, 12:08 AM
yep, i have x disabled already. i was thinking of disabling k a few months ago - i think i might actually do that, since it just goes off way way too much for false alarms. And when they are doing major air maneuver things at Miramar, it's brutal.

yeah i remember that too :( used to live right off la jolla village drive over near UTC and i would get those random ones too

i'll take that v1 oout of your glove box for you and keep it in mine car :D

True statements... V1's and any other laser detector does nothing to prevent getting a ticket from laser. You need an active laser jammer or shifter.

Yea, they are in my town now also. I use to be able to drive pretty quickly at night around here without a worry but then this happened a few nights ago:

san diego pd motors have been LIDAR certified for some time now (upwards of 15 years). traffic got them recently, but they use everything at their disposal (stalker dual k/ka, VASCAR, LIDAR, etc).

Yeah, I've gotten a ticket about a year ago, laser.

Story: down hill, middle of a sunny day, biker pig is hiding behind a concrete pillar. I'm doing 80mph in the left lane along with other cars. I see him aiming at us with his laser and think nothing of it as the car in front of me is actually pulling away.
Pig end up pulling me over...
Even says he has a bmw too -well is bike is- I'm honest so I say yeah I was driving 80. Got a ticket for 80mph on the freeway, $214...

To protect and to serve they say.

i have a V1, however it does nothing against laser.. other than tell you you're screwed, and they already got your speed reading.Yeah if you're the only car he points it at then you're screwed. I got tagged once and he even commented that he could watch my speed drop suddenly as i was hard on my brakes. Too late though.

But two separate times now, my V1's Laser alert went off when a cop zapped a slower car ahead of me, giving me just enough warning to hit my brakes before he zapped me a second or two later. That's two good Laser saves my V1 scored :buttrock

I disabled X-Band many years ago - the only thing that uses it in the past 20 years are those little radar speed information trailers they park around my town.

Same here, gotten a few seconds of warning from the cop not being accurate enough when hitting a car in front of me, had JUST enough time to slow down before he got a good bead on me.

Lee, you sure you're running in the right mode? Disabling X and even K are all good, but if you aren't using one of the logic modes it will NEVER shut up in the city.

And BTW, SD Sheriff still use K band. Killing that totally might not be the best idea, even if most of it is false.

Yea I'm sure - it's on auto mode. It's fairly predictable on my daily commute from La Mesa to Scripps Ranch and back. It's quiet most of the time, but has to bleep for the Albertson's off the 125N, and then NOT go off for the CHP biker boy pointing a funny look device at me right before the ramp to the 52E, then somewhere on the San Diego side of the 52 summit if I hear jets in the air I am sure to start getting crazy K band -- full blast, then constant medium strength, then back up to full blast, then dead, until the next jet 5 sec later ....

I must say though, I do have pretty good cop instincts sans-detector. Well, for one thing, I don't go more than 15 over on any surface street - the only ones I go 15 over on are only the 4+ lane roads like Friar's or Mission Gorge or equivalent. Any inner-city streets though, no way I would go more than 5 over if that. Too many messed up pedestrians and drivers alike, not to mention that most city street surfaces are way to eaten up for speed travel with a race suspension.

But on the highway I definitely have my 5th sense up when the detector is off. I have some kind of visual pattern matching burned into my brain that causes the hair on the back of my neck to stand up if I even unconsciously detect the presence of any vehicle with a light top and bottom and dark doors, or dark top and bottom with light doors. Also, any full-size American sedan alerts me - it's weird - it happens instantly without thinking.

Yeah, the V1 is ok....but I much prefer the Bel Sti combined with the Blinder M20 X-treme jammers!!! :)

The jammers are active only when they receive a signal, and they're small enough to conceal in grills and things....;)

...so now I no longer look like this :shifty when I drive.....I look like this :cool

You're right that they work well, but they're always active.

i still don't understand how jammers are effective if they get a signal that isn't a speed, isn't it obvious you're using one??

Jammers and shifters are a bit different. The shifters will shift the signal long enough to allow you to slow down. The jammers will jam the signal, and you need to hit a button to allow the signal to continue.

Yes, if you continually block the signal it will be obvious that you're using one.

any information is good information --at least when someone is watching you :paranoid:

I run my V1 constantly.

Twice i've thought about bustin a move and held back just a tad (women's intuition? :D) in time to hear the laser warning go off.

I've been saved from several tickets by being alerted by a Ka warning.

And a few weeks ago i was pulled over by a very gentlemanly officer (who was actually quite hot) ...no ticket though, and i knew he didn't have me on radar because my V1 never made a peep. ;)

the only thing that worries me is a few radar speed signs on soledad. my v1 is PoP compliant and the thing never goes off when i drive past em.It's possible that those radar signs are using X-band, so if you have X-band disabled obviously it wouldn't alert you. I doubt they're using PoP on those signs. The radar/speed information trailers in my town don't set my V1 off, so one day i pulled over, enabled X-band, and the V1 suddenly went nuts. It's the first time i've heard an X-band warning in like 20 years !

Yeah I think those are X-band. There are a couple of those signs near here that sets them off.
