View Full Version : Shifter Wants To Shift Out Of Gear For Me!

I'm not sure if this is a sign of worn tranny bushings or motor mounts or the clutch.

I've noticed that when I push the shifter into 1rst, then as soon as I'm engaging with the clutch and my right hand is still resting on the shifter, I can sort of feel it trying to pull back into neutral when accelerating and at the point of contact when engaging the clutch.

I've never noticed this before, hmm any ideas?

It may be your clutch that is going, because your clutch isnt functioning correctly its not engaging it in gear so it wants to pop out to neutral

It's normal (dunno how much it's moving)...

Read the link above, fyi.

How much movement or pulling do you feel/see in the stick? Does it stay in first gear or pop out sometimes? Is it only first gear?

My first car was an Accord 5 speed, it popped out of gear, turned out it was the synchronizers.

My Dad always told me not to rest my hand on the shifter:

Why does third gear sometimes pop out uncommanded?
The problem you are experiencing is due to a mis-alignment of the blocking rings to the synchronizers. The result is that the pressure due to the helical cut of the gear face forces the shift fork to pop the carrier out of the gear. If you count your shifts slowly, you can get it in gear easily. The result of a popping shifter is from one of two things, a burnt blocking ring or improperly adjusted/aligned aftermarket shifter. Rings become "burnt" or ground when you miss a shift. See below about one of the causes of accelerated transmission wear. (Back to the Top) (http://www.viperclub.org/faq/tsbfaq.html#pagetop)

Why is it bad to rest your hand on the shifter knob?
When you rest your hand on the shifter, you are loading a bronze transmission component (called a slider) against steel components, either the blocking ring or the gear stop. This will cause accelerated wear on the softer-metalled blocking ring, which will soon lend itself to popping out of gear. It can also cause an overheated gear from the additional loading. This will not show itself until fatigue breaks it. Unless you are shifting the car...don't touch it.

So how are synchronizers replaced? I've seen kits that replace all the oem bushings. Will this help?

The shift bushing kit

I also plan to get the UUC 8.5lb flywheel + E34 M5 clutch kit, would the parts in this kit replace the worn synchronizer?

Occasionally the shifter kicks out of gear when I try to engage too.

You'll have to tear the tranny apart to get to the syncro

What exactly is a synchro?
