Hello,

As of right now my top is nonfunctional. It is partially open, and the top button is still flashing. If I push the button the top won't go either direction.

I'd preferably like to close the top( with roof up and sealed) so I can drive it like normal until I bring it to a BMW dealer on tuesday. Is that possible?

I guess a backup plan would have to be to manually put the roof down so it can be drivable.

I have read many threads, but wasn't sure if I had a similar problem.

thanks
Jason

the top wont go forward and latch because it's frightened of that horrid sticker across the front glass.

KIDDING!

Assuming your trunk is closed, I'd first check out the fuses. If the fuses are fine, and you need to get her closed, reach under the rear seat, and pull the emergency orange/red straps. These straps will release the motors, and allow you to manually pull the top closed.

I am assuming the trunk is closed. Though, when I put the key in the trunk it doesn't give me access to open/close the trunk. When I turn the key left it makes a weird electrical noise.

So when I pull the cord, will it allow me to close the top with roof up and sealed?

Yes. If you have your owners manual handy, the emergency close procedure is in there and detailed.

If not, I think the instructions are listed in one of the stickys in this forum.

Hello,

Alright I'm about to manually close the top by pulling the cord.

But, I have a question about step 4 of the process.

The manual says: place a screwdriver at the middle of the cover on the front convertible top frame, and pry it out of its recess.

What's that mean?

Also wondering what the cause of the problem is, and what BMW will have to fix in addition to resetting the motors. Any idea on cost?

thanks
jason

Jason:
Sorry..cant help you on that "pry it out of it's recess" statement. I've never had to actually attempt what you are doing. (manual closure). Just take your time, look at the area, and think it through. You will be fine.

Most likely it's a microswitch that has failed. Resetting the motors can be done easily yourself. It's in the FAQ/STICKY in this forum, and we can walk you through it. Ditto for replacing a microswitch

Pry it out of the recess is the squre plastic cover right above your head when sitting in driver's seat, which then give's you access to the hex/alen key screw, you need to turn it left using the key in the tool kit in the boot. keep twisting until the roof starts to come down it take's at least 3-4 minutes to fully close using the way.

This just happened to me today too. I checked all the fuses and relays and all were okay. I finally moved the last two bows up by hand and then pushed the top switch and low and behold the top started working again. A micro-switch must not have triggered and by moving the top manually it triggered the switch. Hopefully this doesn't mean the switch is going bad. We'll have to see if this happens again.

This is the little square you need to pry out.

Hello,

Thanks everyone so far.

Good and bad news. Good news is Cabrio was right. I lifted the back piece up and then was able to close the top(so the roof is down). It does make a loud crash as it falls down. I didn't have to unleash the motors.

Bad news is that when I try to close the roof( so roof is up) it gets caught in the same problem position detailed below:

-(hope you can follow this) The phase the roof stops at(if working normal) is just before the back end of top(with window) is supposed to come up so the lid can go down...then, if working normal, the back end of top goes down over the lid.

So, I think something came off track. Why won't the back end of the top(with window) go up like it should?

Thanks
Jason

update:
Brought it to BMW and they found out a screw came out. charged me 185$. Could have been a lot worse.
