View Full Version : Driver school in the rain
CABimmer 02-14-2003, 02:04 PM well, looks like the driving school im going to on saturday is going to be wet. Just wanted to get some advise before I go up there.
I do have new MX tires and am bringing some rain-x. any other ideas other than driving slow. :bawl
Hammm3 02-14-2003, 02:13 PM Rain X is great, but you need to be careful because it gets hard to tell how much it is raining when you are using it / hard to tell how wet the track is getting.
Also you will not be running the line, run off line and you will go faster.
Have fun you should learn more about how to drive your car correctly in the rain.
Hammm3 02-14-2003, 02:16 PM email - BMWracerITS to get the really good advice......
B.Watts 02-14-2003, 04:28 PM Put the Rain-X on NOW. You can't do it once you are at the track and its raining. Plus, it seems to need a good day or two for haze to completely go away sometimes...particularly on dewey mornings. Also, get some Fog-X for the inside of your windshield. Making sure that the inside of your windshield is absolutely clean is key so that fog doesn't have anything to stick to.
Other than that, start out easy, but when there's no one behind you and nothing to hit, don't be afraid to push a little bit. You'll find you can go faster than you really thought. Driving in the rain is a great time to experience what it feels like to really have the car out of shape...and then learn how to bring it back in. It's easier to learn at 50 mph than 100 mph! ;)
Most of all, just have fun. Don't buy into the attitude that most of the students will take. They'll be ticked that its raining. Go out and drive...you'll probably learn more in one day than you've learned in your last 2-3 schools. Anyone who complains that driving in the rain isn't fun is just ticked because they are either afriad of it, or they can't do it.
In racing, there's nothing more satisfying for me than knowing that I have an advantage over almost every driver in the field when it turns wet. As the clouds roll in, 99% of the drivers get depressed and worried while I'm chomping at the bit and my confidence is growing by the minute. Driving in the rain is all mental...go out and have fun!
Hammm3 02-14-2003, 04:32 PM  well put , i love the rain
CABimmer 02-14-2003, 04:45 PM Thanks guys,
Hellrot 02-14-2003, 07:10 PM Bring some towels. You'll want to dry off your seats between runs. :(
CABimmer 02-14-2003, 07:11 PM Do you still have to run with the windows down?
Hammm3 02-14-2003, 10:10 PM Yes windows must still be down
But the fast you go the less rain come into the car!!!!!!!!!!!
It will be fine, I have never hurt anything inside the car in the rain
trumperZ06 02-14-2003, 10:59 PM :) The advise that you will be driving a different line on a wet track is accurate. The normal line will be "slick" from being worn smooth and rubber build up when wet. Stay off this line except when cornering and go across the line without changing steering angle or speed.
;) You also want to be smooth in your driver imputs. Smooth braking and acceleration, smooth steering... set up the car before corner entry! You will learn more about balancing a car and weight control driving in the wet. Have Fun!
///M_trackstar 02-16-2003, 02:43 AM I thought the line dries faster than the rest of the track (wet trac, no rain falling)?
///Manuel 02-16-2003, 03:42 AM Rain is awesome. You gotta watch out cos sometimes, as you are looking out of the window, you can get literally splashed in the face with water! Other than that, braking isn't really affected as well as turn-in speeds. One thing that is extremely affected is acceleration, you have to be so smooth to avoid fish-tail. It will feel like you are driving a car with enormous horse-power. You will get to learn so much and be A LOT faster in the dry. Enjoy.
CABimmer 02-16-2003, 02:12 PM it only ended up with light rain for a few sessions. no big deal. man I love the track. and the axis ultimates worked out great. my Pilot sports started to go away before my brakes.
///Manuel 02-16-2003, 09:30 PM When you say "before your brakes", you mean they gave up too? Light rain is just about as good as heavy rain, it makes the track nice and slick :)
CABimmer 02-17-2003, 02:47 PM brakes never went away, I could just feel my tires getting greasey, I was running my 225-45-17s and just had a lot of push. I need to get a set of 8.5 contours and run 245s all around.
