Well my dad needs an AWD car since he's moving back up north. So, I suggested the X5 but he was skeptical of repair issues. I'm very 'nOObish' with the X5's so I thought you guys could help me out some. What is the reliability like with one of these? Whats the best model? I could go all from stats and specs but I figured it would be better to get an opinion from those who drive one every day. Thanks for the help!

Out of warranty. Unless you could get an extended warranty deal on it. I recommend certified pre-owned.

My wife has put 68k on our 2003 X-5. The only thing we have done other than oil changes was having to replace a wishbone bushing due to all the potholes here in Pittsburgh. I only wish they made an X-7!

My 3.0 X5 was trouble-free in the 5 years (since brand new) I've owned it. Only the window regulators (3 out of 4) failed but replaced under warranty. I traded it in 1-1/2 years ago but I still see it out on the road quite frequently.

Based on my research, the 8-cyl models seem to have more problems than their 6-cyl counterparts.

If you are buying out of warranty go with a 3.0 much less problems, still enough power

2002 3.0, 5 speed. 103,000 miles, zero problems aside from some hatch rattles. The most reliable, trouble-free car I've ever owned.

Why get a V8? BMW's 3.0 is an excellent smooth running engine. Its probably one of their best. It also gets really good mileage and puts out about 220 hp. Not shabby, and more than enough to give you passing power at high speeds.
