I just recently got 7 quarts of synthetic oil in my 2001 325i and I need to reset the oil indicator.

How do I do this in my 325i and it should be set at 10,000 right?

try searching, this has been covered plenty of times.

get in the car, hold down the trip reset button in the cluster while turning the key to the first position. keep holding the trip button and then a reset message will come up , flashing i think. (i do so many and they cahnged the specifics for different models) once it starts flashing let go of the button and then press and hold again, it should reset

I just tried this and it did reset the oil maintenance thing, but now instead of saying oil maintenance it says next inspection 15,xxx.

Did i goof somewhere?

no you did it correct. 99+ as far as i remember all are able to do it via the gauge cluster easily. the older ones need a tool or to make a jumper for grounding a wire under the hood on the maintenance port. But the answer to your question is...your good to go for 4-5k...depending on which oil you put in.

First oil change in this car so lots of noob questions. I put 7 quarts of the Mobil 1 Synthetic.

So is it normal now instead of a oil indicator to say next inspection 15,525 or whatever.

Yes, normal. And next time you reset it, it'll say "oil service 15525", and the time after that it'll say "inspection 15525" again. It alternates back and forth between the two. But when the counter gets down to about 7500 is when you should be changing the oil. The concensus pretty much around here is that 7500 mile oil changes are best. So twice as often as BMW's service interval indicator suggests.

Thanks for the information, very much appreciated!
