I'm neutral on the look of the OEM rear spoiler. I would only be swayed to add the spoiler depending on it's functionality.

Assuming one was an advanced lapper who on occasion might drive 9/10th's, I wonder under what circumstances (aka speed) would the spoiler be useful in keeping the rear planted?

I do suspect that the GT wing (w/ or w/o the spacer) and front splitter on the LTW, when used in combination, have a purpose. However, for expense and styling reasons, I wouldn't go there.

I also question what the effect would be of using the combo of a stock M3 spoiler and the GT splitter.

What do you think?

Thanks,

The factory spoiler adds downforce - but only because of it's weight. It is not aerodynamically functional. Nor is the GT/Lightweight spoiler without the risers. The GT spoiler with extensions does work.

my factory spoiler is VERY FUNCTUAL - it houses my other 3rd brake light and that is about it. I would love to trade mine in for the tall version of the GT wing though.

:D

What does "FUNCTUAL" mean? It that like punctual?

It's the funked-up version of functional.

This month's Roundel has AC Schnitzer's claimed numbers for downforce with their super-gaudy looking front and rear wings for E46. I seem to remember them being ~100 pounds front and rear at 125MPH, but you can check them out (can't find the mag right now). However, they might be more impressive than the E36 LTW front splitter and rear wing. Personally, I use my spare tire and jack to create ~50 pounds of downforce over the rear axle, available at any speed.
