Thank you. mcclaskz 05-20-2007, 11:40 AM On and E36, there are 2 flat surfaces on the front subframe that have holes in the hood right above them. Mount your pins first and then see where they contact through the hood. Then drill throught the hood. When you get to the pin plates on the hood (sparco type design), drill the holes for the machine screws smaller than the screws so that you can use the hood to sink the screws into. Hope that helps. notdownfornj 05-20-2007, 12:00 PM Awesome, that helps, thank you! notdownfornj 05-20-2007, 12:07 PM So, put the hood pins in place of the factory mounts to hold the hood down? jmitro 05-20-2007, 12:14 PM here's a photo of where I mounted mine. the bolts went through the hole in the front clip frame (don't know how else to describe it), immediately above the grills. it's not hard, just takes a little time and creativity. then I cut holes in the hood with a dremel and lined them up carefully. http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i308/jmitro2000/IMG_0085.jpg mlytle 05-20-2007, 12:30 PM yes, use the holes in the radiator support that were originally for the a/c condensor bolts. they are directly under holes in the inner hood structure. mount the pins, put a little greas on the tops, close the hood, open the hood and look at where the grease from the pins stuck to the hood. drill. yes, these replace the factory hood latch mechanism. a lot lighter. however, i would leave the left hand factory hood latch in place as it has the hood catch on it. just in case the hood pins don't get hooked, it will keep the hood from folding up over the windshield on the outlap. seen it happen several times.... jmitro 05-20-2007, 12:33 PM yea, radiator support. that's it. another photo. these are OMP pins. http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i308/jmitro2000/IMG_0184.jpg CKKrause 05-20-2007, 01:02 PM Any idea how much weight is saved by using the pins? -CKKrause jmitro 05-20-2007, 02:09 PM hardly any. they weigh about 2lbs and the hood latch and accessories are maybe 5-7 pounds mcclaskz 05-20-2007, 03:39 PM I would second leaving the factory latch. On my first practice of my rookie race I didn't latch my hood pins and created a, "custom" hood. Funny how fast the other guys seemed as I was getting towed back into the pits. D'OH! thenobot 05-20-2007, 04:33 PM Couple of tips: - mount the pins to the chassis, then put some paint (nail polish or paint marker) on the top of the pin then lower the hood onto it. Then you can really see where they touch! - use a UniBit (christmas tree bit) to drill through the hood. Makes for very clean edges and easy to get the size right. CKKrause 05-20-2007, 08:16 PM On the other hand...losing 3-5 lbs sounds good when you weigh 245 and are trying to make a minimum weight!!!! -CKKrause mlytle 05-20-2007, 09:35 PM hardly any. they weigh about 2lbs and the hood latch and accessories are maybe 5-7 pounds the aluminum ones weight a lot less than 2lbs. and every ounce counts when you are trying to get an e36 down to scca ITR weight within the rules. I am in Horsham and have done many on race cars. I can show you exactly where and how they go. Ricky ///Mracer 05-21-2007, 08:23 PM any recommendations on where to buy the pins? jayhudson 05-21-2007, 09:18 PM I'm using Sparco. Several of our supporting vendors can provide. Just spent some time this afternoon installing them. Will finish the job tomorrow. Jay benaj 05-23-2007, 08:12 PM +1 for Sparco hood pins, on both our cars. +1 for recommending using Unibit. Saved soooo much time and aggravation. I did the first set with screws, which were a pain in the ass. Smarted up the second time and just riveted them in with my $5 HF riveter. The rivets have lasted just fine. txse46m3 05-23-2007, 08:20 PM the aluminum ones weight a lot less than 2lbs. and every ounce counts when you are trying to get an e36 down to scca ITR weight within the rules. (2765 with driver.) I heard the alum ones have a significant higher failure rate. No proof of that, but I got steel. txse46m3 05-23-2007, 08:20 PM any recommendations on where to buy the pins?
