View Full Version : sport, snows and spare?
schmeah 05-19-2007, 01:58 PM This may be stupid question, but for you guys with the sport package and run flats, which don't come with a spare, what are you doing for spare rim / tire options when you swap for your winter snows? I'm expecting delivery of my 335i coupe (sport, manual, monaco blue/cream) in 1-2 weeks and am just beginning to think about snow tire options, which I assume I'll need here in NJ. Thanks for any replies.
bmwave 05-19-2007, 03:22 PM I think its an excellent question and here's what I did when I ordered my winter rims and tire package: I ordered a spare tire with steel rim from tire rack as a temp spare while the rim/tire gets fixed if it goes flat. That way I can have the BMW roadside ppl tow me home and put the spare on for me.
The only time my plan will fall apart is if I do long distance winter driving out of town. Eitther I bite the bullet and lug the spare or cross fingers...
E90Toad 05-19-2007, 04:53 PM I got 17" ASA JH3's with Dunlop M3 DSST runflat tires from tirerack. They were very good at getting me around and we had a lot of snow last winter in Colorado. Dry performance is good for a snow tire but you will be happy to get the summer tires back on. Not the best looking rim ever but it looks very good on the E90/92 for a winter setup.

Brian Farrell 05-19-2007, 09:09 PM I bought regular winter tires Toyo (great winter tire) and an M mobility system to keep in my trunk in case of a flat. It is good enough to get you to the nearest garage for a repair. This is great for the city but may not be practical for long distance drives. It worked for me and saved alot on buying RFT for the winter.
greenie99 05-19-2007, 09:17 PM My car was delivered in Dec. with 17" A/S tires. I put them and the rims in storage at the dealership and had 17" RF Blizzaks mounted on 17" rims from Tirerack. In March, I ordered the 18" 335 BMW wheel and mounted Dunlop Dureza performance non-runflats with an M-mobility kit. The only drawback to the kit is that it can really render the tire unusable. My dealer said that before I use the kit, I should call them and they would come get me!

gloster 07-05-2007, 07:25 PM For those of you running winter tires, what do you do about the tire pressure monitor system (TPMS)? Did you buy and have a second set of sensors put in the winter tires? Do you just live without? If you live without, do you have to stare at a warning light? I know the dealer could turn it off, but that's a pain.
My car arrives in a few weeks w/sport package meaning summer tires. I live in Northern Ohio so snow tires will be a must. I like to just change over my own wheels each season. So I'm stressing the TPMS issues a little. I'm also stressing the RF winters versus non-RF winters.
I'm also stressing the ship carrying my car right now sinking in the Atlantic. But that's just me.

I know the dealer could turn it off, but that's a pain.If you use the same rims all year then it doesn't matter (in case you didn't already know). If you have a second set of rims, I'd buy a second set of TPMS sensors for them.
gloster 07-05-2007, 09:09 PM I'm plannng on a second set of rims since I don't want to keep remounting and I want to swap the wheels myself.
I'm also debating 17" or 18". My summers are the stock sport package 18"

i wouldn't go above 17" for winters. 16" will also work fine. The car will look like crap all winter long (at least that is the case here in Ontario), so the looks of the wheels/tires is inconsequential.
forrestpilot 07-06-2007, 08:16 AM Thought about getting snow tires, but decided against it. Does not snow that much in central VA. When it does, plan on leaving the car in the garage and taking the 4x4 truck. Roads usually clear up in a couple of days.
grubster 07-06-2007, 10:56 AM I would think with the 335i coupes really big brakes, we might actually need at least a 17" rim to even clear the rotors. I have two M contours (E36 M3 rims) with snows on them, I will try one on the front, if it fits, I'll be looking to buy 2 extra M contours for winter driving. Anyone know how much the Sensors are? I assume you also need to add the special silver caps as well to the snows..
From tirerack:
TPMS SENSOR
$160.00 for a quantity of 4
TPMS VALVE
$36.00 for a quantity of 4
Total Price: $196.00
gloster 07-06-2007, 12:10 PM Thanks sor! Nice info. I wasn't sure what to search for.
They're hard to find for some reason, I could only find the aftermarket TPMS systems, but if you punch in your vehicle and look for wheels there are links saying 'OE Sensors Required', that link will take you to where you can add a set to your cart.
