Hopefully someone can clear this up.
I was told to test the motor mounts, give the gas quickly and watch if the engine moves at all.
I want to know should the engine not move at all, or should it move a little? At what amount of moving is it an issue. I think mine moves aobut 1/4-1/3 of an inch.
Thanks

I had a bad tranny mount in one of my Volvo's. It was an automatic and the movement in the shifter gave it away. Opening the hood, having someone you trust sit in the car, have them jam their foot on the brake, put the car in 'D' and see if the engine moves. Then have him gently hit the gas pedal, increase the rpm's and see if the engine moves.
It's a simple test, be careful though.
We changed the tranny mount and the engine mounts, the car felt awesome after that job.

I have a 6 speed, so would I just let the clutch up a bit instead of putting it in d?
I know it does not move just gently increasing RPMs.

Bingo. My Dad trusted me enough that he got on the ground and looked under the car while we did this test. He could see the tranny lurching and is sunk and then rose up etc.
Just be careful. Motor mounts are made to last a very long time, but they can be, just like anything else, broken when pushed too hard etc.

If your motor mounts are shot when you go WOT in first gear the engine will move enough above 3000 rpm's for the exhaust to rattle off of the the heat shields and you may pull the upper radiator hose off of the the radiator. Those are the most obvious tell tale signs.

Ok good to know. I have no rattle. The upper rad hose cracked yesterday from the thermostat, so I was checking the motor mounts, but this was definately jsut the hose cracking and not being pulled off by the motor moving.
What kind of mileage do people replace motor/tranny mounts at? My 528 is at 123k, don't know if I need any of those replaced.

Haha Or when you Are driving and start hearing a Noise like your finger on a industrial fan getting chopped off comming from the front of your e36 318, and drive home to pop the hood and find your mottor has fallen off on one side but is still driving great!

For as cheap as they are, and being it only takes an hour or so with a piece of wood, some standard sockets, and a floorjack.
