There's this youth in my neighborhood who drives a 325i convertible. I don't know who he is but every time we pass each other on the road in town we give each other the old hand wave salute. I like the camaraderie among BMW owners. They're such distinctive cars, you feel a connection with fellow owners. I'm glad I purchased my e21.

It was like that in Boise, ID for a long time also. I moved to Portland, and I noticed the 2002 crowd that met at a local pub didnt enjoy our company, and viewd E21's as parts cars only:confused It just so happened that there was a huge disparity in tax brackets, but that's fine. Most of them had other people fixing their cars- we wrenched on our own.:)

When i drive my E21 past a newer model BMW around here, people look at me kind of wierd...

Maybe if i saw more E30s they would respond differently.

Here in Spokane,WA. I only see a few E21's and a few 02's i wave to them.
Most of the rest are Yuppies that have no clue BMW built any thing that long ago. I also ride a 1977 BMW R75/7 the amount of idiots who say
"I did not know BMW made motorcycles " blows me away . They buy BMW's because they are precieved as status symbols. Out side of that most have no clue and dont care to know. about what they drive or the history behind it, Not sure how many of them even know what the blue and white rondel is on their car.
That is why internet sites like this are great we can at least talk and share with people who get it
And turn a wrench on their own stuff.

yeah it's pretty cute, kinda similar to how homosexuals have gay bars, they all wave and hug :)

There's a bunch of e30 drivers at college. some of them i know, one of them i know is here on these boards. but everytime i pass them, we give the highbeam salute and/or a friendly wave out the window. its like when i drive my aunt's wrangler every other wrangler on the road honks his/her horn, at first youre like "wtf is his problem?" then you catch on and honk, flash, wave back.

THat's what i was talking about, rjk. Good will among car owners who drive the same thing.

here in canberra (Australia) e21ers are few and far between. but i love that feeling you get when my 323i catches the attention of passing fellow BMWers, they see my minilites and i always seem to get a smile... or when a stranger makes a nice little comment about how "i always wanted one of those..." or "what a bucket of fun they are to drive" or they have a little peak inside the window in the carpark at work...it makes it all worth it.

I had a little BMW fun today, when an M5 guy likes the little old Baur it made me all warm and fuzzy....Proves the point that to people who appriecitae cars the old ones still get their attention.

very nice. your fog light looks a little crooked btw.

there was an e46 m3 at the gas station when i pulled in, and the driver came over to me and asked if it was an e21. he said, man i wish i never got rid of mine, the most fun car ive driven. it was good to see that they still appreciate the roots.

I gave up on keeping those straight. I can't even keep them aimed right. they car vibtaes and rattle so much those fog lights are kinda of random lights. I need to get them figured out, just tighening the nuts don't fix it.

Every once in a while I see this guy in a nice e28 on the Parkway and he gives a nod everytime I see him. Thats cool. I had another e21 pass me one morning and I gave the kid a wave and he just looked at me like "who the F*ck are you?" - Clueless.

I also have an old CJ7 now for the summer. The Jeep wave is alive an well. Everyone from Old CJ's to brand new wranglers give the old wave. Also riding my motorcycle everyone riding waves and also boating everyone waves. I am getting a workout!

i find it just the opposite with MOST people who drive more modern BMW's. Once and awhile you'll get the guy who used to own an E21, and he'll talk with you at the gas station, but usually, the people driving newer cars don't know what an E21 is. You certainly won't see a couple of e36 drivers waving to eachother as they cross paths, either.

Last night I drove the Baur over to the grocery store and an older Audi S4 pulls in straight across from me. He says to me as he pats the Baur "I'm glad Dave's car went to a good home" Then he introduced himself and told me a story about the former owner and the car. I run into this all over town with the Baur, Dave knew alot of people...I wish I knew him.

I bet Satch Carlson (Roundell editor) knew Dave since he was here when Dave was here....

Today I was just driving around on campus for the heck of it, then lo and behold, the tan colored E21 around here that everyone but me has seen rolls to a stop at the corner. I was about 1/8 a mile away and I noticed an older woman was driving it, she looked like one of the 'locals'...regardless, when she saw my car her face lit up, so i turned the corner in her direction. While trying to honk the horn and waive at the same time I almost lost control of the car and would have run into her...what a crash that would have been...our E21s...the only two i've ever seen on the road in person.

But still, it was hilarious to see her face light up when she realized what I was driving. :)

Corny jokes aside, I now truely understand the E21 camaraderie!

lol. if i saw another e21 around here on the streets, i would probably do the same thing. get all giddy and full of emotions and crash my car. not once have i seen another e21 in person (except for our '83 and last weekends meet).

I specifically went after an E21 because it was the last model prior to the BMW becoming a "status symbol", same as my old Volvo 240s, loved those too! Once Volvo went to FWD, i gave up on them.
