View Full Version : SC e39 540 vs. SC e36 M????
dinan540sport 05-18-2007, 02:12 PM Does anybody know how a supercharged e39 540 would stack up to a supercharged e36 MMM? I know they are two way diffrent cars, but I'm just curious what you all have to say or if anyone has had first hand experiance.
VF est:
VF sc m3 hp-350 tq-295
VF sc 540 hp-415 tq-400
I dono I think the 5 would take it.....
I Love Curves! 05-18-2007, 02:18 PM I think you're right. V8 Torque FTW. The powerband "behind the curve" of the V8 would seriously leave the I6 behind. Now if the I6 were turbo'd and you were on the highway the I6 may take it.
ColoBoff5ers 05-18-2007, 03:26 PM I know raped a stock E36 M3 last weekend on a club drive. the 540 is stock too.
John 540i6 05-18-2007, 04:53 PM well, ive seen a few supercharged M3s on the dyno and most put between 290 and 320hp at the wheels. The 540i puts down around 360hp.
The 540i should win every time. From a stop, the m3 might get the 540i but after 2nd gear, the 540i will catch the m3 and keep pulling away.
540-S3 05-18-2007, 06:09 PM I always start out by checking their weight to horsepower ratio. Anytime I see a car that may be fast, I right away go online to check their ratio to see how they stack up to my 540. My '97 had a stock curb weight of 3748 lbs. With some weight reduction and Dinan's HP numbers, my car's ratio is at 8.90 lbs per HP.
Here are few other Weight/HP ratios that may interest you:
1997 BMW 540 - 13.48
2006 BMW M3 - 10.26
2006 Dodge Charger SRT8 - 9.79
1999 Dodge Viper - 7.51
2006 Evo MR - 11.25
Mustang 500 GT - 8.259 (?)
Audi TT - 13.10
Jaguar XKR - 9.91
Audi R32 - 14.20
2006 GTO - 9.31
WRX STI - 11.17
2004 Mustang SVT Cobra - 9.40
1995 Corvette ZR1 - 9.135
2007 E55 AMG - 8.71

I think you meant to say..... weight/hp ...and not the reciprical.
Interesting numbers. Thanks for posting.
Cacatfish 05-18-2007, 11:42 PM If you're looking at VF chargers, I think the 540i is a better application. Mainly because the CF blowers favor a torquey engine since their power is so focused at the upper rpms.
The M3 has more FI options though, from twinscrews to turbo. These will be a lot more beneficial for an M3, but also more costly.
ArmySweitzer 05-19-2007, 12:04 AM arent there bolt on turbo kits @8k ish that get the m3s near 390whp?
not sure where but i remember seeing a lot of discussion back when i was thinking of getting a m3...silly thought...hehehehe.

Lscman 05-19-2007, 09:53 AM This thread is all about acceleration only. A typical used 540i with such a supercharger would be deadly because it would not turn to negotiate the first corner.
If this is a straight line drag racing objective, why not get a V8 Mustang with a Vortech for combined cost of about $10K and run 10 second 1/4 mi? The M3 and 540i can't touch a solid axle ponycar in acceleration comparison unless you want to pay 3 to 5x for LESS acceleration & then accept ongoing parts breakage and BMW repair costs. The Mustang has the proper design & hardware to withstand this abuse. You can buy a NEW 6spd tranny for a Mustang for $2500. A new BMW replacement tranny costs triple.
If this M3/540i suoercharged comparison somehow involves road racing performance, you need to be discussing weight, brakes & suspension instead of blower kits. An M3 with blower will get lapped by a decent N/A track car that's setup for that use.

Edited it - thanks!

Do you even own a BMW? Serious question. I've never seen you reference one in your posts.
