View Full Version : Rusty's engine & tranny are OUT!
fullswing 05-18-2007, 10:56 AM After a couple weeks of a little bit here and a little bit there... I spent 6-7AM this morning with Barry's hoist, Rusty, and a few of my little dwarf friends...
Leading up to this morning, I took the exhaust off last weekend, then spent about an hour a night this past week taking off the driveshaft, gear selector, clutch slave cylinder, fuel hoses, brake booster vacuum hoses, fuel hoses, etc. than I attached the engine to the hoist and started pulling the engine out.
For some reason, at one point the engine and hoist wouldn't budge no matter how hard I pulled the hoist away from the car... grrr...
Ah, the throttle cable... oopsie. Disconnected that then, BAM! Thar she blew!
So the engine's sitting on my garage floor right now. I'll be cleaning and replacing a few parts with some of my new and polished parts. Next I need to get Rusty out of the garage and put Blue back in. When I'm done stripping Rusty, off to the yard she goes. I'll have a respectful send-off ceremony for Rusty since she was a very generous donor...
Pics to follow...
Great way to spend the morning by the way! :alright
MattE21 05-18-2007, 11:25 AM Woo! Nice to see you are working on this project every day and thanks for the updates! With any luck, your monster will be tearing up asphalt months before Joe's ever turns over.
Scott72 05-18-2007, 12:10 PM Thanks for the updates... Any timetable for having the beast running? These are my favorite type of post - project cars. Make sure you post of plenty of pics...
waferman 05-18-2007, 05:56 PM Yea, get a pic thread going or make a website with your progress. I need to do that, come to think of it:stickoutt
So you never told me the choice of engines- it sounds like you are sticking with Rusty's engine. What about the stuff you sent to TEP?
John
fullswing 05-18-2007, 06:25 PM Stuff from TEP isn't back yet. Can you believe it? They're pushing 3 months. Good thing I'm not in a hurry to pay them anyway.
Re pic thread... cardomain or multiply.com might be the way to go for me. Maybe multiply instead, so it's let complicated...
fullswing 05-28-2007, 06:47 PM a thumbs up shot from my son

engine coming out...
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b327/fullswing/Rusty/IMG_0271.jpg
got the engine sitting on my garage floor...
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b327/fullswing/Rusty/IMG_0302.jpg
next step was to take off the front subframe to body bolts and the front sway bar to body bolts... (same on other side too)
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b327/fullswing/Rusty/IMG_0278.jpg
then take off the front shock tower bolts... raise the body a bit... and the entire suspension assembly slips from under...
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b327/fullswing/Rusty/IMG_0304.jpg
took off the brake booster too...
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b327/fullswing/Rusty/IMG_0309.jpg
cleaned them up a bit... so now the booster is sitting waiting too...
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b327/fullswing/Rusty/IMG_0314.jpg
next was rear suspension assembly beginning with the rear sway bar...
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b327/fullswing/Rusty/DSC00004.jpg
this is the end of the bar disconnected from the rear trailing arm
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b327/fullswing/Rusty/DSC00003.jpg
the rear trailing arm followed.
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b327/fullswing/Rusty/DSC00006.jpg
off with the halfshaft, brake drum, pivot point bolts (2 of them) that connect the trailing arm to the rear crossmember... and bam! (no, it didn't fall on my foot - had it supported with a jackstand) same with the other side, by the way
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b327/fullswing/Rusty/DSC00008.jpg
next up was the rear shock mounts: off with the hex bolts on the side, then the two crossmember to shock mount bolts... then off with the shock mount
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b327/fullswing/Rusty/DSC00010.jpg
i had issues i think with the order since i didn't disconnect the shaft from the diff... or the half shafts from the diff - one of the bolts got rounded off (:mad) so i'll have to worry about that later...
but off came the subframe and then i pulled the diff slowly as the driveshaft went up and over the gas tank's connecting tube...
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b327/fullswing/Rusty/rustydiffout.jpg
next up are the gas tanks, the rear seats, the dash, the glass, the rest of the electricals... then i'm done. the carpets have seen better days though. hope to get the car Rusty pulled out next weekend or the weekend after that.
i'm tired... need some coffee... or red bull...
e21enthusiast 05-28-2007, 07:45 PM looking good.i cant remember if i read it before or not. is the motor from rusty a stroker?
waferman 05-28-2007, 08:24 PM Wow, someone likes shoes. Alot. Cause that a LOT of shoe boxs on that rack:eek: LOL
You are a bulldog with that car! You will have a spare for everything at this rate. BTW, it looks like the front crank seal is leaking in one of the pics- did you notice? That's something to replace while the engine is out...

re shoes... my wife and i have have a shelf each of shoes... actually, all of them are in the garage, instead of inside the house, so we don't bring them inside and dirt up the floors... but yes, my wife has 9 pairs of running shoes - she marathons (i'm the wimp in the family)...
about the front crank seal - the one near the crank pulley? i'll check, but it could've been me spraying wd40 or something... if so, definitely... did i mention that the intake manifold i got from you is the one i'll be installing? you'll have a piece of you in my engine, man!
a spare for everything... that should be our mantra! parts cars rock!!! :redspot
looking good.i cant remember if i read it before or not. is the motor from rusty a stroker?
thanks, man. yeah, rusty's motor is a tep stroker - forged je pistons, bored to 92mm, 2.0L crank, lightened flywheel... :D which is why the 120mph speedo from you will be absolutely necessary!
Thanks for the updates... Any timetable for having the beast running?
good question - you know what, my neighbor just dropped by today and mentioned that our july 4th block party might be a perfect time... it's a good target, actually - don't need to buy the neighbors drinks cause they'll be drinking anyway - we can have an extreme makeover e21 edition reveal, hahaha!
i should invite ubernoob, barry, cerpin taxt and boostede21 to the party too... :stickoutt
Greg323i 05-29-2007, 01:15 AM Yeah, but now they know your ulterior motive!! :rofl
fullswing 05-29-2007, 06:07 PM true, but they'll probably be happy already that they won't care! lol
last year, the block party was in front of our house... kids had one of those inflatable castle things with water running down a slide... got to sit on my front yard under the tree and listen to some live music... pretty good band too, the lead singer was from across the street :)
BoostedE21 05-29-2007, 06:11 PM Nice pics Jimbo, looks like alot of fun. ;)
waferman 05-29-2007, 08:34 PM Jimbo, what's that beer behind you in the first pic? Looks like 'Crackheadleaf' or something..I allways like to try beer that I see others drink. Sometimes I find something I like; other times WTF is this?:lol Gimme the name, please!
John
320bimmer 05-29-2007, 08:42 PM That looks like fire starter (not a beer), above that it looks to be MGD
fullswing 05-29-2007, 11:29 PM hahaha! it IS a firestarter: crackleflame :D
next to the MGD was six pack of smirnoff ice for the wifey... behind both of them is a 12 pack of SAN MIGUEL BEER, the unofficial beer of the Philippines -
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b327/fullswing/newSMB.jpg
the brand crosses all economic strata - from the richest men to the daily laborers... the probably the one and only thing people can agree on back there...
blitzed310 05-29-2007, 11:48 PM Great work Jimbo, next year we shall share a 12 pack of San Miguel!
