The speedo and odometer on the 6er do not work.

Could this be linked to the same problem or are they different issues?

Also, does anyone know how to fix.

Of course if the speedometer is not working, then the odometer won't work, but if the odometer quit first and then the speedo quit, then they are separate problems. The odemeter has a couple of plastic gears that get brittle with age and are notorious for breaking teeth. Here is a good link on removeing the instrument cluster and fixing the gears:

The speedo could be several things, First check the pulse sender in the rear axle:

Use an ohmmeter with a needle and spin a rear wheel watching for a fluctuation as the the reed switch in the sender makes and breaks contact.

It could be bad memory backup batteries in the instrument cluster. If other gauges are flaky/dead or the Service Interval (SI) lights won't reset, then the batteries probably are dead, if only the speedo is dead then sometimes the batteries leak and corrode the traces on the circuit board.
