I might get to drive a BMW again, but I don't have much clue about the X5. I was wondering if anyone knows of a reputable place to do a pre-buy inspection on a 2001 X5 3.0 in the San Gabriel Valley/Pasadena, CA area.

Buy a certified pre-owned BMW from a BMW dealer. I recommend buying at a dealer located in an area where lots of retirees reside. Those folks won't abuse the cars much, have money, and since they don't work , pretty much take the cars to the dealers for service and usually have low milages on the cars and usually lease, since they don't know for how long will they drive. If you want to buy from the current year, buy a loaner or a demo. Loaners would usually have a bit of milage for that year but you'll save bigtime when compared to buying brand new. I bought my 07 X3 for $33,900 with only 8 thousand miles.
