We're in a wine club which switched from UPS delivery to FEDEX, and the new boxes have a great new label on them. That's some serious planning to coordinate being drunk and getting a box of wine every month. Must have been a problem somewhere...

I always heard that wine in a box is cheap.... surprised that a wine club would send you that.

I wasn't sure if you were or not...they keep telling people good wine is coming in boxes, but I like the presentation of a bottle, and real cork. Plus plastic changes the flavor of everything.

You better get used to rubber cork and screw caps. All wine is moving this direction because cork is relatively expensive and not as good at preserving the wine. More and more wineries (yes, even the good ones) are moving to rubber and even to screw top already.

In reality, the wine-in-a-box method is the best at preserving wine, but just like rubber corks and screw tops it'll take a while for the wine community to accept it.

I like the box label though, it would suck if you just HAPPENED to be tying one on the day your wine got delivered. That'd make for an interesting confrontation with the local FedEx guy!

Eh, they said that before "cork was running out' and most have switched back. There won't be corkless bottles because of the presentation and tradition of it...and as a consumer I can buy the ones that do it the way I want. I don't save wine anyway, so what cork does 5 years down the road is not my problem.

Also plastic changes flavor, and is known to contain PCBs, which are link to cancer. The day I see really good wine, and not just the wine that's $10 at the store and not three buck chuck from Trader Joes is the day I think the industry will change.

We'll be driving flying cars running on Hydrogen before the wine industry comes in bags. :)

Actually this falls into the Urban legend category. As a chemist I can tell you that PCB's (polychlorinated bephenyls) which are nasty beasts have not been made in well over 10 years. The plastic corks used in wine bottling are made from LDPE (low density polyethylene) which is probably one of the most harmless plastics out there, and should in no way affect taste as nothing is extractable from the polymer. Now when it comes to the experience, I'm all for the real cork myself. I was fortunate to pick up a case of Heitz Cellar Cabernet 2001 a few years back. It is awesome but my supply is sadly running out. :(

I have heard the same that box or screw cap don't change a thing but rather preserve the wine better. Of course I agree it will be hard to break the misconception that those mean lesser quality, I was not buying wine based on that criteria prior to learning more about it! ;)

Fucking FedEx Ground SUCKS in that regard. I order a lot of wine and they won't leave it at the house at all without signature. They try three times and then send it back to the winery. Then I have to call the winery and say "not Ground this time, assholes" and it has to spend another week in a hot truck.

FedEx BLOWS when it comes to alcohol shipment. UPS is much better.
