Hey Bimmer Owners,

David here, one of the hosts of Night Majik Radio. I'm just letting you know about this slammin' SCCA-Drift event hosted by my good buddies the SCCA and a very close friend of mine, Jamey Cicalese.

Not only is this guy one of the coolest Miata drifters on the PLANET, he's also extremely talented at setting up events to get people sideways in the fastest way possible.

If you're into drifting or even just into motor sports, you OWE it to yourself to give this event a whirl, the entry fee's are cheap, the day is guaranteed to be a BLAST and all in attendance will have a chance to meet up with Night Majik Radio's hottest host, David Adams.

http://media.coolcatracing.com/ads/driftad468.gif (http://www.sccadrift.com/events/20070527WCS.htm)

Still don't know if you want to go? That means you should just follow your gut and check it out. Go ahead! Bring your car out there, compete with the greatest that the south east has to offer, it's up to you how far you take the event so there is NO pressure to do any better than anyone else.

Don't have a comp license? That's cool! Go out there and get some instruction from one of the MANY drifting instructors that are guaranteed to be on location that day!

So what are you waiting for, click on the banner above or the banner below, get out there, and shred some rubber!

This would be an excellent event to come out and learn, the whole first half of the day will be devoted to practice and education. I, myself, will be out there PERSONALLY making sure that all who want an instructor have an instructor.

Go ahead and sign up, we'll see you there, I'll even let you use my helmet, LOL!

Rafa,

Now which forms are you referring to, because I can talk to Jamey and email them to you directly if it's something generalized.

You're an SCCA member, an elite one at that with Club Racing on your side, you should definitely make sure to check the SCCA payment button and that should be it, your information will be on the list.

I'll talk to Jamey and MAKE SURE that you're added.

Well I was reading thru the rules and they said to download the forms and have them completed before regestriction...... So I dont know I'm going by the website.

By the way I'm bringing a 4 team crew plus driver, So do I pay extra for the crew members? :confused

Rafa,

From what I understand, if they'll only be spectators, they are free, if they will be riding along, they are 10 bucks a pop and any additional drivers are at registration cost.

As far as the registration, when you sign up, you'll pay only the 65 dollar entry fee and when you arrive at the gate you should present your competition license and/or SCCA membership card. Since you are a club racer, your competition license will allow you full access to all venues of this event.

Let me know if you have any other questions,

-Dave

Maybe I'm missing something, but why would a radio station in WV sponsor an event in GA? :confused

...well, no, surely there's not any call sign infringement going on. :paranoid:

Well internet broadcasts aren't FCC regulated, when we decided on the call sign, it was simply based off of Night Majik Radio . . .

You still can. let me quote their rules. http://www.sccadrift.com/rules.htm

5. Drivers

5.1 Driver’s Credentials

Drivers must possess a currently valid driver’s license.
All registered drivers must be 18 years of age or older
Current SCCA membership suggested, but not required
All registered drivers must attend mandatory drivers meeting, where flag designation, course worker positions, course lay out, group rotation, and safety rules are specified
Necessary response incase of mechanical failure and in an emergency situations will be explained and instructed
Drivers will have designated wristbands to identify their individual grouping
All drivers must follow the rules and request of the event officials and track stewards

The event organizers have the right to refuse an entry at their discretion. This permits organizers to protect themselves and their programs by declining the entry of someone who is believed to pose a safety hazard or other significant threat.

Correct me if I'm wrong... Please.

Yeah, for the price, you can't really beat the event. Just remember to come prepared and be prepared to go through a LOT of tires as there are 6-FULL HOURS of practice and instruction time available.

I'll be PERSONALLY instructing at this event and I have a soft-spot for BMW owners, so if a Bimmer owner wants instruction, you would take priority.

Thanks guys,
-Dave

P.S. If you want you can read through this.

http://www.nightmajik.net/back_to_basics.htm

That is a compilation of my lesson plans that I wrote when instructing over at Virginia International Raceway. Keep that information in mind, study it, learn it, memorize it, live it. You will all be GREAT at this event.

Thank you SO MUCH to all who are registering, it really means a lot to me! I promise I will work my ass off to make sure that all of you receive as much instruction time as you need to get your sea-legs on the track.

Im considering doing this... The instructional part that is... Im no 'Mad tight driftorz' :D. ide have to find some spare tires/wheels though before i went. I dont have the money to burn my street tires... Do you think ill burn through a hole set of somewhat new rear tires? hmmm

Wow its far away.

Yeah it's a distance, I'm traveling far, but I love motor sports and promised a lot of people that I'd be there.

It's really cheap to get in, so I wouldn't worry about that, but as far as tires, I would prepare to burn through a set of rear ones. It's all pretty low speed (maxing out 3rd gear RPM wise) so your front tires will be fine unless you've mastered the 4-wheel slide or zero counter steer.

I would bring an extra set of rear tires because there are 6-full hours of practice and instruction time, this is a LOT of time for each driver to get their feet wet and to get their tires good and hot.

But yeah, I'll be there teaching, so if you want any pointers while out there, let me know and I'll get you going.

Trying to drift with 255F and 205R doesnt work very well btw. Half the time the car would go into a donut when i didnt want it to as you can see in the vid...

Ill most likely go... How many spots are left?

A bunch! We have a 50 car cap, and we're not near it yet! So yeah sign up!

First Video: Throttle control, you're perfect on your counter steer, however, 8/10ths of drifting is proper throttle and braking manipulation. It seems as if you're over correcting, but it seems as if the snap oversteer is simply caused because your rear tires gain a surge of grip and then just as quickly lose it.

Second Video: Practice your donuts. I can never stress it enough but Practice, Practice, Practice. That parking lot is more than large enough to start practicing your sideways control. If you want, we can meet up and I can help you out with your donut control, once I show you, you'll see how simple it is.

--With your car in second gear, get to a rolling circle with very little throttle pressure.
--Quickly push the throttle in, push the clutch in and sharply release (pop) the clutch. This is a technique called clutch kick, it's essentially a rolling burnout.
--The rear end will kick out sharply so be prepared to catch it, when you reach the half-way (90-100 degree) point of the spin, you want your front wheels to be facing completely straight ahead.

--Once it starts to spin from that point this is when you're going to start working your counter steer in slowly but deliberately. You don't want to go so fast that you straighten out, but you don't want to go so slow that you simply do a complete donut.

--Once you find the balance in your steering, you're going to work the steering wheel in a "sawing" motion while manipulating (feathering) the throttle. You will find that your throttle position will change significantly between feathering to almost off to full throttle rapidly and often.

Working on this technique will help you learn what your vehicle wants to do when working with an extreme slip angle.

Let me know if you need anymore information and definitely let me know if you want me to come out and help you out with your vehicle control sometimes. Its what they trained me for, LOL!

Ive tried the clutch dump on a road and it didnt work out too well haha. Just went into a all out oversteer, even snaping to full countersteer didnt save it. Ill try it in a parking lot this weekend and see what goes down. Thanks for the tips man.
I just converted my honda roomate into bimmers(hes been chillin with me and drivin mine for 1.5 years) and he just picked up an E30 :D a 3.73LSD's :devillook going in when it gets here so hopefully both of us can come down.

My names dave too... lol...

I'd like to see that happen man, honestly, sign up for the event! You'll love it, I know it's a trek, but you'll have so much fun that it won't matter.

Hope to see you both there.

P.S: That's whats up, we should hang out, for some reason when there's more than one Dave in any given area, crowds seem to step aside.

In regards to the competition, it's going to be open practice from 8AM until 4PM. That means when you're queued up for the track, you take off and you're going until you run out of tires, gas or practice time. Once that's done, everyone competing will make 3 runs, the best of which will be rated and put for final scoring. Once that is determined a Great 8 will be determined and the eliminations will commence.

Drifting isn't divided into groups by power simply because drifting isn't a measure of your car's ability, it's a measure of the driver's ability to maintain said car. Basically, power is nothing without control, so I wouldn't worry too much about being up against some guy in a 500hp Mustang, I mean, it may line up that way, but even then, if you have more control of your car than he does, there's no reason he should win, spins, corrections, late apexing, early clipping, shallow lines, etc are all counted against a driver in qualifying.

In regards to your video, I some pretty nice driving there, your car has a lot of power and you've almost gotten it under complete control. I was watching your SCCA video and that looked very fun and very smooth. I think you'll do fine if, like I was telling 328iJunkie, you practice your throttle control more, that was pretty much the ONLY thing that was stunting your drifts on that video you sent me. You had excellent steering control and even saved yourself from a few calamities, LOL! Yeah, you'll do great, I think you'll see with the way this event is setup that you should be able to expand upon your technique with low speed car control, but when the time comes you should be able to open up the stable and let all 340hp out of the gate.

This turned out to be an AWESOME event. I want to thank Raf for coming out in his M3 . . .he really represented out there and I MADE SURE that Bimmerforums got it's props. I must have mentioned BFC about 20 or 30 times during each of his runs.

I hope you got some great video Raf, cause I'm ultra psyched to see what it looked like from inside of your car. That M3 not only sounded WICKED but also looked VERY good sideways.

I was putting a video together yesterday but I think I got the most awful editing software:mad, I finished it last night but I couldn't render it, so I will play with it some more today after work...

I loved the event, my wife had a blast and a tan....:stickoutt, My brother in law loved it too. I got to see if I can make it to the next one.

I'll post it once I can put it back together again.

Hey no problem bro, I'm just glad that everyone had a blast! That's what we were aiming for and now I can rest a lot easier knowing that it all was worth the effort. HAHAHA! We went the entire Saturday and almost ALL Sunday without ANY sleep, LOL! The adrenaline started going, the hype started moving and those cars started drifting, and I felt as if I could go on forever.

Thanks again everyone, I'll make sure that I get everyone the information on the next local event.

Well..... what can I say, the video is lame thanks to my editing software that went crazy:(. I put this video together from raw footage, so be nice. The songs are my favorites, so If you dont like them sorry... I do.

I wanted to be 9 minutes long but end up 12, After almost taking a bat and beating my PC :comp: I'm getting a new editing software.

I will go to the next event and this time will make it at least into the final 8s. We had pro-drifter out there like Andy Sapp (BMW).

Here is the video enjoy:

Yeah, I was the one to make that judgment call between one of my best friends in the drifting world, Andy, and my own team mate, Mike . . . it was a tough call, but Andy was a very good sport about it, and after watching several angles of video tape, I feel more and more as if I made the right decision in advancing Mike.

For an unseeded competition, this really proved to be one of the toughest to judge. You guys would die laughing if you saw how many ties we had.

LOL!

I put a ton of vids up on youtube and google video and Mike has them on his myspace too.

We've got to get a tire trailer worked out before going to too many more competitions. Luckily, Marcos and Andy were both nice enough to help with wheels transport this time... and it was greatly appreciated.

I think I'm going to clear off my memory cards and start taping all of the runs in competition where Mike makes it to the upper levels. There is some discussion on Import Atlanta about the judging and I wish I had every run on video just to look over again. Of course, Mike always questions things and watches his own runs 100 times and asks me what I saw, how the other competitors did and if I agreed with the judges. I did this time... even if it I wasn't cheering on Mike, I still would have agreed. I had a great view of the course from where I was standing and could clearly see how close everyone was to clipping points. That was a hell of a competition though, many of the drivers were easily within inches of the cones, holding nice angles and really attacking the track. There were a few runs that I personally would not have been able to decide... it was just too close.
