My transmission went out. Some of you may be familiar with the old "ZF" auto trannys in the older 5 and 7 series. Rev the engine over a certain RPM and your transmission is toast.

I was driving 85S from the University area to work on Wednesday and got in the far left lane to get around the I-77 connector traffic and 'CLUNK, VRROOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMM!!!'... nothing. No accelleration. I just coasted to the median and stopped. Glad I have AAA. Only cost me $6 to tow my car back to the house. Now comes the fun part...

Which comic book does say that?
Would be better you would have told us some details, like mileage, last time you changed tranny fluid and filter, is the fluid level correct, how is the color of the fluid, does it smell burned, what did you see in the cluster as warning and so on.

I would think you of all would understand the only major issue with that type of transmission.
Anyway the filter, fluid etc was all done last year. All levels were correct, every so often the transmission would go into limp mode and the cluster would say: "transmission program - see owners manual". I was advised to change the mode selector switch. I did and it seemed to cure the problem and now this...

Any ideas?

Manual swap. You don't drive a Benz. And even if you did...manual swap all the same.

If you going to spend the money you might as well go manual IMO

if this is your daily driver just stick with auto, itl be on the road quicker and cheaper, but if this is your toy go with manual

So what if it is a daily driver a manual is more fun. Except for bumper to bumper traffic but even still, I would swap for a manual.

I've driven an M6 with the paddle shifters and the owner told me that, after trying both methods thoroughly, the automatic transmission gives him more performance than the manual. His explanation was that the computer knows how to shift and drive better than you do.

I believe that only if you have an arthritic left knee.

I really miss my 5 spds (2 - 3 series and both my 5 series) I would like to do it but I really need to see the time and $$$ investment. This is my daily driver and toy (for now) I sold my e30 when I bought my house. So I haven't gotten another one yet

Keep in mind that my friend and I were talking about a 2007 M6. It doesn't just have a Sport mode, it has a Sport dial for you to pick your Sport intensity setting. So, when I say that the computer knows how to shift better than the driver, that includes healthy-knee drivers and arthritic-knee drivers alike.

But then that makes my original point somewhat moot, because the original question was about an E32.
