Drove a rental about 1000 miles. In my estimation, the most amazing all around pickup out there. I like the styling, the interior, just an all around very good looking vehicle for a pickup. I cant get over the interior. Two tone even on the base model, the front 40-20-40 split bench had enough stowage to satisfy even my needs (laptop, chargers, cell phone, pistol, ammo, pens, keys, music drives....). The staility at highway speed and the power from the little 4.8 LSX engine are also amazing. ergonomics left me wishing for stereo buttons on the steering wheel. Factory 17" rims were decent, Four wheel drive was flawless as usual, but there seems to be no provision now for a nuetral position in the t-case, as my 99 does have with its auto four wheel drive system. Factory bedliner was great, and the tailgate cap they should have been putting on for the last thirty years. I didnt tow with it, but it held my dog and bikes, luggage, and all five of us with ease.

Now for the down side. Did I mention great power? Let me redefine that. This little 4.8 LSX belongs in the Solstice. I never driven a pickup with an engine that wants to rev to seven like this thing does, and, might I add, thats where its power lies. This thing has no torque. NONE. Its a high revving, albeit very smooth V8 that is tuned for the absolute opposite of what it is designed for. 3.42 axles left me wanting 4.10's, which are an option. Little truck will lay back in the seat, hard, but from 30 mph rolls, dont drag race this. I would definitely go for the flex fuel variable cylinder 5.3 ...only about 10 more HP but I know they make torque. Adding to the downside is this little nugget of truth:

i once had a 70-ish Ford half ton four by four with a 302. It had a two barrel carb and headers/exhaust. It had a C4 transmission as well. 3.55 gears in both axles. Loved that truck. I drove it to school a lot, filled it with gas. On the highway, it got about 15, in town, about 12. Ghastly, I thought. Flash forward 30 years. Aerodynamics, better tires, better lubricants, better bearings, better (more free rolling) brakes, better transmissions, COP technology, multiple O2 sensors with MAF technology, SMPFI, electric fans...and guess what this little half ton 4wd gets? 11.7 in town, 15.7 highway. Which nixed my ideas to buy one. Driving habits might get me another mpg, but they wont get three.Three highway trips and multiple in town fillups, and thats what I got. I imagine the 5.3 does about the same. This is not a GM bash, my buddies 06 f-150 does the same, and my father in laws 1/2 dodge gets ten.
Step up manufacturers, start making some benefit for all this technology at the pump, opr stop charging $32,000 dollars for a pickup.

Let the record state that my little 302 2bbl wouldnt keep up with this 07 if it had three carlenths of a running start, but does torque mean anything to GM?

The 5.3 runs like a raped ape. We use the 4.8 and the 5.3 here at my job and they are worlds apart. I wish we could spring for the Vortex 6.0L

anyone have real world mpg comparisons between the 4.8 and 5.3

I am still astonished at how poor a fuel economy it returned me

Bad gas mileage but these trucks are tight. It seems trucks are really coming into their own lately...

my personal rating would be nissan titan, ford f150 (quality is always way better) and then teh chevy. dodge comes in WAY last.

The torque of a pick up truck is not meant for acceleration it is geared towards pulling a load or crawling through rough terrain...

and you didnt mention they get amazing gas milage... for a truck

my personal rating would be nissan titan, ford f150 (quality is always way better) and then teh chevy. dodge comes in WAY last.

Id say GM, Toyota, Ford, Dodge, Nissan. Nissans are barely a reall truck anyway. And the new dodges have a lifetime powertrain warranty. Combine that with a hemi and well you can figure it out from there.

my dad just got an '07 Sierra 1500. He opted for the 5.3L and it has plenty of power and currently is returning 15mpg around town. Its pretty basic as it is a work truck but its a 4 door, no leather no fancy stereo, no fancy wheels. But it has every button you could imagine on the steering wheel, drives like a dream, and looks badass. Has plenty of torque as well.

when I was helping him research the truck we only saw 1 with the 4.8 and it was a striped down regular cab with a short bed.

Wow, I am really surprised you are getting such bad gas mileage with that 4.8. I don't have any experience with the 4.8, but my friend's Yukon has averaged 18.9 mpg over its lifetime with the 5.3. My grandfather's 1500 with the 5.3 gets around 17.5, but he does mostly around town driving, no highway.

What, constant repairs and shoddy workmanship in every way?

Dodge comes in DEAD last. they're the worst built trucks on the market.

I'd still buy one over a Tundra or Titan, those trucks are FTL

1 word on the mileage an lack of torque

Diesel but if you have no need for a 3/4 ton or 1 ton, The 5.3 is the way to go the 6.0 vortec is a great engine but is a fuel hungry pig.

Might be good for a truck, but trucks suck.

Hadf it gotten 16 or 18 on the highway, I might have thought about buying one, but 12 made me laugh in contempt

I just bought a '07 GMC with the 4.8. It's a standard cab fleetside. With a little over 2k miles, around town mileage is 15. Freeway average is 19. What a great little truck. The interior is an improvement over the old body style.

Not too bad. My '04 Duramax averaged 13 around town and 20 on the freeway.

The diffrence is here in Northern CA, Diesel is 3-5 cents more than premium unleaded. Makes it hard to justify buying the diesel unless you're towing 75% of the time. The 4.8 runs on regular which makes it way cheaper to daily drive.

maybe some software updates.

Modern exhaust catalysts have made some sloppy programmers, thats been proven

Combine pick-up aerodynamics with auto transmissions and gas mileage is doomed. My daily driver is an 02 s10 auto 4cyl.

With my 2.2 liters of fury, i get a combined city/highway of 19MPG. When i let off the throttle over 75mph, the speedo plummets.

the drivetrain has the following:
4.10 gears (3000RPM @ 81MPH)
CAI
Chip
A/C delete
Cat delete
MSD wires
