What's up guys (and gals, if there's any in here). Uh...my mechanic identified an engine clanking sound as emanating from the air pump. He found and installed a "reconditioned" air pump. What is "reconditioned" mean, anyway? Like new, I guess? Anyway, when I got the car back I noticed that a lot of the pinging/clicking noise had been suppressed but now the car has that dim but steady "clicking" noise when I accelerate. It isn't as bad as it was, so I don't regret spending the money to have the air pump replaced. Is that "clicking" noise normal, or am I being too picky about my car? Help would be appreciated but not mandatory.

A reconditioned air pump would be cleaned and have new bearings installed and any other bad parts replaced, parts that are still good are reused.

Yes, these engines tend to click from the valves. If the adjusting eccentrics are in good condition you can set the valve clearance to .006" and it will quiet it some. If the eccentrics are worn it's difficult to get an accurate valve lash setting but they are cheap and easy to replace.

What is the price to replace an air pump. I mean no offense by this, why did you pay someone to replace the pump and not try to do it yourself?

Not EVERYONE can work on their cars. I can no longer to any involved jobs, damn HOA rules.

And +1 on the valve adjustment. It should help a bit, but it is pretty hard to rid of ALL the valve tick without replacing parts. These motors are getting up there in age.

Hey, sorry buddy. I did take offense by your comment, but only because I get defensive when having to justifying the spending of money.

I was looking for an answer like, I don't know how, or I don't have the tools, or I only have one arm, or I'm too lazy. I was then going to let you know to try it on your own next time and we will walk you though it.

It doesn't matter, I don't care anymore.

The '77-'79 cars with EGR have air pumps. The '80-'83 cars with the O2 sensor and cat don't.
