View Full Version : Was there any good reason for losing the C in CI?

Does anyone have any idea why they're all just "I" now? the C seemed to be very convenient for telling people exactly what you had, without having to do any further specification. So what's the scoop?

e92 = coupe...the new chassis code for coupes made "c" redundant

99.9999999% of people in the car driving world couldn't give a dingo's kidney that the internal chassis code is e92. They go by the badge name.

You can tell from my profile I have a 330 Coupe by the 330Ci. If I had a new model I would have to add "coupe" to the tag line, or use the stuckup e92 designation.

If the e92 name is sooooo important, why not call it that? :rolleyes

Well you could always just tell by the fact that it has 2 doors

Yes, mine's debadged, too. Very cool, I think.

Yes, the 2 doors, and completely different styling distinguish it from the 4-door.

I don't think 99% of the world would know that Ci meant coupe, rather than a trim level.

Ci doesn't stand for coupe, C may, but there is no I in Coupe or team...but there is one in win.

There may be no I in team, but there's also no F in way :D

"335cictt" and the like gets a little long, in my opinion (yes- I added the "tt" part, but if you need to spec everything out, better make sure every non-BMW afficionato knows what's under the hood).

I know this is NOT truly the case (so no flames, please), but, whenever I see a de-badged car, I can't help but think it is a low-end model that someone wants me to think is a top-end model. Maybe that's just me.

i agree, but i think i would want a sleeper. such as someone wanting to think they're hot shit, race me, thinking i'm a crap 3 series and then get spanked and cry home to mommie =D

Good point, you see a lot of that...a ML320...de-badged...a 528i...de-badged...etc, etc...I rather keep it on so people know what I have.

What do you do with the Convertibles then? A conundrum. :confused

perhaps they should just take off all the numbers, and stop ruining the looks of their own cars.

It's a European thing that made its way back here. Back in '87 I went to Germany and saw about 1/2 of the cars without badges. Most were either tiny engine cars (725s, 316s, 518s) or huge homping monsters. It's both a sleeper thing and a "I think you'll think my 318 is really a 335" kind of thing. It only works on the ignorant and non-observant.

even if it doesn't have a badge, if you know what to look for (wheather it's a 335 or a 328) you can tell. 335 has dual exhaust tip on each side of the car. The coupe obviously has 2 doors. If you know enough about BMW's to say hey thats a coupe but it doesn't say Ci. I wonder if they welded the rear doors closed? If you know that much you know what the hell you are looking at without having the C in Ci.

They didn't lose the C in Ci, they jsut stopped distinguishing it from the normal 3xxi. because the model numbers were distinguished (as someone else said earlier [e9x]) and for all of you that think Ci meant convertible only the C meant convertible. I'm almost positive that the "i" stands for inline (as in ur engine is an inline 6)...

i is for injected (as in fuel)

Wow, I didn't know my 330Ci coupe is really a convertible :lol I cant wait to fold down my steel top. Being and Audi owner, do you have any tips on how I can easily fold down my solid steel convertbile top. Just ribbing you :D

That would make for an interesting setup in the 650i, 550i, and 750i's... All those in-line 8 cylinders?

Correct!
