Few days ago i was left with the keys of my 740i 1995 in my hands and the engine stilli running. the key did 360° and unable to switch it off.
Now i am starting it and putting it off with a screw driver turning directly on the ignition switch.
A good mechanic which specialize on bmw said that they replace the broken part which i think is the steering lock house and take the same tumbler and place it in the new part so i could use the same key.
Can anybody tell me if its something i can do myself o is there a need for a special tool, the cost of the mechanic is too high and now i can't afford it.
maybe i can receive some info from u guys. thanks

Call around and find a different mechanic that will do it cheaper. You don't even need a mechanic, find a cheap locksmith. This part isn't BMW specific, you don't need a BMW expert for it. In fact, you may even be able to find a locksmith that can repair the locking mechanism instead of making you buy a new one.

nobody seems to want to take on this job, a tumbler with keys costs about 70usd i was thinking maybe the head of the tumbler snapped, if so i can replace it and let a locksmith cahnge the new tumblers combination to the old combination of my old key, the question i have is since the key it has got a chip, where is the signal received? does the signal go through the tumbler to a specific place? i am starting the car now even without a key in the tumbler. can anyone help? thanks
