View Full Version : Is this normal? (Coolant Thermometer)

Sometimes my coolant temperature gets about this high. My manual said it need not be a cause for alarm if you have driven for long periods of time at fast speeds (which I had been). The minor defects page says a problem might be "low coolant level" in the radiator. If anyone has any thoughts, please add them. Thanks.

Thats not bad, the fan will kick in and the temp will cool down. But check coolant levels anyways.

Mine does the same thing when im idealing for a while, but like i said, the fan(s) kicks in and it cools down

Mine normally operates just below half way but was going to the 3/4 mark on the highway at 70 mph.

I ran a bottle of prestone cooling system cleaner and did a good system flush, installed an new 71 deg C thermostat and a bottle of Redline Water Wetter and my temps are much lower. On the highway at 70 it stays right at the half way mark.

The only time it climbed up the 3/4 mark was at the end of a 125 mph run for about a half mile. That didn't suprise me, my intercooler is right in front of the radiator and at that flow rate and boost level its pumping a LOT of heat through the intercooler into the radiator. As soon as I resumed normal speeds the temp came right back down to 1/2.

Thanks. The radiator is brand new, as are the radiator hoses. Both fans work. Guess that's how it's supposed to be.

Yeah, I may put in a 75 degree thermostat. I have Watter Wetter in my radiator.

mine runs to just under 3/4 when you get caught up in traffic or when giving it a real hiding going up mountain ranges. It cools down very quickly though, so you know the system is working properly.

I also have a new radiator, new 80 degree thermostat, new waterpump, all new hoses, and am running Zerex G-05 at a 50/50 mix.

My gauge goes between 1/2 and 3/4 if I'm running the A/C and at idle. It's only a hair above 1/2 at speed when running A/C. Without the A/C, at either speed or idle it stays at or a hair below 1/2.

I've got a fan shroud from a fellow board member off his 1980 model and am going to install it to see how it works. Will post results hopefully in a day or two.

When I first got my last E21 it used to get that hot but once I did a cooling system flush, new 75 or 78 deg t-stat and removed all the A/C stuff from in front of the radiator the car wouldn't go past 1/2 no matter how hard I drove it unless it was over 100 deg outside.

Sorry for the delay in posting the results. Been busy with work and school.

Improvement in cooling after installing the shroud has been one full needle-width cooler on the gauge for all the above listed conditions.

I've also got a little bit of a fan "whine" now when I get @4000rpm's! I like the sound!
