View Full Version : So I might need help moving a car
cliffhanger407 05-15-2007, 01:01 AM If everything pans out, I'm gonna be picking up a late 80s 944 Turbo on the cheap. A friend of mine's dad wants to get rid of it, it's been sitting behind his house for a year or so and it doesn't run. He's sick of it, and I'm bored and need a project (and to learn).
So we've already established that it doesn't run, but I'm pretty sure that he hasn't paid taxes on it either, which means even if it did run, it's still not street legal. Soooo... Anybody in the dunwoody area want to help me move a car (probably with a trailer), or do I need to call a flatbed?
Thanks in advance.
CVGTURBO86 05-15-2007, 01:37 AM I hate to say it, but you really do not want a 951 as a project car. Especially if it does not run. Trust me I have one. Mine was in perfect running condition when I bought it and it still is....but over the past year, I have had to put $4k in maintnence alone. I did not even have to pay labor on the work I had done either.
Goodluck if you do get it though.
atl530i 05-15-2007, 07:13 AM He is getting a 944 :) Those cars can be a pain to work on. I ended up doing all the work to my friends old 944, it was not easy. I think I'll stick with BMW. :)
cliffhanger407 05-15-2007, 07:22 AM But, but but but... it's pretty!
:(

Hey man, it is all your decision, I am jsut letting you know what a pita they are. :)
BMWautofab 05-15-2007, 09:47 AM Well if you change your mind i'll take it! I can pick it up today if your friend really wants it gone. As long as its a Turbo car...

Just no. Don't do it unless you want to sell your 5'er to fund the project.

He is correct.

I charge 1.5x rate to work on those.
But, but but but... it's pretty!

Pretend you never saw it...

You don't want it. Turbo or not is not worth getting a non-running 951.
1 - Not Running 951... bad news
2 - Running 951... bad news
3 - Brand new 951... Sweet Ride
944s are a BITCH to work on. Nothing is easy. Getting it back up and running is more than likely going to be a HUGE PITA and unless it is perfectly straight, paint is great and interior is mint it is just not worth it. I picked up a 944 back in the day because I truely do love them but just read up on them. Even the die hard owners admit they are a bitch. I won't ever buy another one that is not SWEET/CLEAN/MINT again unless it is a track car and that will need a MINT condition engine and suspension. I won't touch a beat up one. Worst money I ever spent, I made 500 on the sale after I fixed some of the problems but was just not worth it.
Now if it was running, or running poorly or something I may say go pick it up. The turbo can be a sweet car. I have been giving a ride along in a BUILT 951 that can walk a viper in a straight line and damn did that thing handle. It feels like an e36 m3... dare I saw better.... Yes I will say it, feels better than an e36 m3 :)
THAT BEING SAID....
Just forget about it.
Here is a 951 you could buy if you wanted. Don't get the 951 that is not running. Too many stupid problems.

I'm not gonna quote what you wrote because I just read it ;)
First off, thanks for all the info. I really don't know anything about the 951, other than that it's a pretty looking car and that it has a turbo.
I assumed that like all porsches, it would be a complete pita to do anything to. And expensive. I don't plan on getting it running for a while, but just to get a start going. I figure since I've got storage I can work on it whenever I can afford to throw money away. By cheap, I mean practically free, since well, his daughter is my best friend and I've known him for a good while and my dad worked with him way back when ;).
Basically, if you think it's worth it for a project to really learn about how stuff works inside a vehicle and i won't get too pissed off doing so, it might be in my best interest. If not, then I'll probably reconsider.
I doubt it's completely broken down; his daughter just said that it didn't work, so I naturally assume the worst. I know it's not 100% reliable, but the extent of the brokenness is unknown to me, so we'll see what stuff looks like next time I go over there (I'll try to start it).
I await the advice of those who know more than I.
95m3Lightweight 05-15-2007, 12:23 PM If you want a good leasson in frustration and downright hatred for a car, then the 944 is the car to work on.
OR
Just pull the motor, buy a chevy conversion kit and go from there.
cliffhanger407 05-15-2007, 12:32 PM I'm beginning to sense a trend here...
So, anybody know of a E30 they're trying to get rid of :D
M3Alpine99 05-15-2007, 03:09 PM That a boy!
I should not be so harsh. If it is free and you want to learn it may be fun. Just be prepared that it is NOT cheap and may NOT be fun :)

Is that what your 944 had in it? I remember driving by it and thinking "damn, I need to come buy his wheels from him"
