Okay here's the situation. I bought a new iPOD so I could use it in the car. I have both the USB adapter and the IPOD specific adapter in the car. My dealer told me that the one with the iPOD plug was recalled, and the USB is the current one. Well turns out that my iPOD only works with the iPOD specific adapter and not the USB.

WHich would be fine, but it "disconnects' about every 5-10 minutes that causes me problems.

Do people use the USB or the IPOD specific, why wouldn't mine work with the USB...and why is this causing me so much trouble?

Does anybody know if the iPOD spec cord was recalled?

I'm going to say that I'll won't be paying for upgrade Audio from another car. I can't get my iPOD to work without disconnecting, and not when it disconnected it either blew a fuse or the amp because it's missing all the bass. Joy.

I haven't even tried my ipod adaptor yet (haven't had a long enough drive to justify it)... now I'm thinking I won't!

Had mine for about 3 weeks using the Ipod specific cable with an 8gb Nano without any real problems.

Once in a while if I plug it in while the car/idrive hasnt 'booted' fully it will lock up my ipod needing a reset but then all is fine.

I did try an 8Gb thumb drive on the normal USB cable and after an hour of it scanning the drive with no results I gave up - my hope was to use a 100gb usb harddrive but as it appears the only fast solution is an IPOD with the serial control cable I'll be sticking with the Ipod.

Could someone though please elaborate on the comment that the ipod cable was recalled???

No one else has posted similar problems here with the 6FL option so your situation sounds like a possible isolated incident. It's under warranty so let the techs figure it out.

using Ipod nano here with the specific adapter(y-cable) and no problems at all. Have not heard of any recall but when I first received my car the dealer told me the previously the cables had been on backorder but they were now in and had one ovenighted to me. Have been using it for about month. Main thing I remember about the new factory installed set up was only connect the ipod with the radio power on...and disconnect with the radio off. sorry you are having problems.

Yeah, I'm not worried about it being covered, just looking for a simple solution so I don't have to bring it in.

Yeah, I understand. It would be nice not to have the hassle of taking it in, but at least it won't cost you anything but time.

Be sure to let us know what the dealer finds or what the fix is.

I'm having the same problem. Ipod 30gig connected to my new X5. Disconnects after about 4 minutes. Dealer said they don't have a fix at the moment.

If you connect your iPod using a regular USB cable (like the one used to connect your iPod to your PC), it will disconnect after a while. It is annoying as hell and I ran into that until I figured out you need the iPod specific adapter cable. No problems there after getting it from the dealer (have to pay for it in Canada but I believe it is free in the US).
I would suggest you find a friend with an iPod and try his and see what happens. It could be your iPod, they are known to act up sometimes. Also if you have a friend with a BMW that has the USB option you can try your iPod on theirs and see, or maybe ask the dealer to let you try it with a demo car that has the option.
Good Luck.

Well, hopefully they will. They said they found some problem in a comfort module or some module that controls it. Swapped it out from another car and they said it work...but we'll see they've had my car a week.

when was your car built? I am wondering if it is fixed since the last month on the production line.

I bought my car in April so, but I haven't looked at the production date. It was fresh off the boat.

Same issue with me in my 328xi with the upgraded audio package. I can't get mine to stay on for more than 3 minutes. I have a 5G video ipod. Keep us posted if they find a fix!

It's fixed, they tracked it down to some module and replaced it.

The paper work says defective MULF2 Module.

And my iPOD does NOT display the BMW logo on it like others posted here.

Having a similar problem. Just picked the car up on Friday (6/15) and had the IPOD adapter thing so you can control it through the radio and steering wheel. It's happened maybe 10 times in 5 days where the IPOD just cuts out and goes right to "Tuner". You hit IPOD and it picks up where it left off. Has happened while driving and while parked in a lot. Very annoying.

Are you using the special iPod adapter cable that has connectors to conenct to both AUX and USB jacks? I had the same problem until I realized I needed that cable. Dealer was clueless until I insisted that the manual vaguely referred to one and then he checked his information packs and voila.

Not sure about the cables- I was given some cable by the dealer that plugs into the console of the car and then into my IPOD.

Does it look like this?

Yes, I think that's it. It has 2 jacks on one end and another USB that plugs into the IPOD. Is that what I need?

Yup. I had problems before I used it. However, some have had problems even with it as evidenced in this thread.

Taking it back to the dealer for service. We'll see what they come up with. Hopefully, they get it fixed.

BG,

Can you e-mail me a contact at your Dealer for mine to contact. They can't find the problem with mine. Thanks!

Yippie! I found other people with the same problem. The systems disconnects the ipod every 5-10 minutes. I brought it in and they said it was a software problem in the BMW. That was a month ago. No reply since.

And to make it worse, I leave my ipod (30gb video) plugged into the car all the time. I go to play it a couple of weeks ago and I get no sound. I try every option I have to play it (headphones, dock, computer) and I get no sound. I sent it in for repair and they need to replace the main board! They say it probably got zapped by a bad voltage/charger. The only place I had it was the BMW. Coincidence?

You can contact Creivier, and see if they will do that www.creiverbmw.com

But mine works fine at this point.

Hmmm, I'll disconnect mine when not in use.

But maybe you can call BMW and mention that my car sat for 7 days trying to find the problem. MULF2 Module.

That is not such a good idea to keep it in the car all the time. The cars temps get 120+ degrees in the summer and below 20 in the winter in MA and this will definitely destroy your iPod eventually (if it wasn't already the cause). Don't forget the iPod has a hard disk and the temp range on it is not as forgiving as regular electronics.

mryakan,

Generally, my car is in my garage or in a parking garage at work, so that is not much of a concern. I do remove it in the winter for the cold, but I have not for the heat, but I will be removing it from now on.

beer goggles,

My dealer was Foreign Motors West but apparently has been swallowed by Herb Chambers. My service consultant was "Kelly on the blue team". I plan on calling her on Monday to ask about the mulf2 module. Service number is 877.203.5049.

I did not think about removing the iPod either. This is from Apple's technical specifications on the iPod web page.
