yes the title sounds dumb, but there is some logic behind it. I just picked up an ecu, wiring harness, and trans from an 87 635csi..the car had M badges all over it but the motor/trans was a m30 but it looked like that could have been switched out...anyway I called Bmw and gave them this number on the Ecu 0 261 200 059... they said it was for an e30 9/88 production and up... Is this true or did the 6 series have an ecu that ends in 059??

I don't remember the e30 using it but the e23/e24/e28 did. Check this link for more possibilities:http://www.pelicanparts.com/BMW/techarticles/E36-DME-Repair/E36-DME-Repair.htm

Thanks..ill give them a try..oh what "pins" do I count..I want to look up a performance chip for the M30 i need to know how many "pins" there are. Do I open up the ecu and look somewhere?

The chip is attached to the circuit board by "pins" which look like centipede legs. they are metal "tab A's" if you will that insert ito the circuit boards "slot B's" THose are the pins you count.
at some point, BMW changed the number of pins on those chips, and obviously you would want the correct one, or it wno't work.

This link references the e30 but the process to replace the chip is the same.
