View Full Version : do i have an alarm?
rastayute 05-11-2007, 12:14 PM i'm wondering if my car (1997 528i) has an alarm system. I see the red clown nose on my rear view mirror, but it does'nt blink, nor too i have a kool sound everytime i close the doors or open em. could it be that i have this and its not connected? I have noticed though that i can set off the panic function by depressing the trunk button. If it helps i see a sticker in the rear window that says anti theft, or something to that effect. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks....
capn shawn 05-11-2007, 12:19 PM I just posted elsewhere that I disabled my 1997 alarm by pulling the fuse in the trunk. Check to see if there is a fuse position for it, on my car it was 3rd or 4th from the top.
rastayute 05-11-2007, 01:31 PM omg!!! it turns out after all these years the fuse was simply missing, i found a fuse and popped it in and voila!!! thanks alot, i have that infamous wolf wistle i think... now on to another problem, is there like a diagram showing the various fuses, i want to check the fuse for my radio, its been acting a little strange lately, when i take the key out of the ignition, the radio continues to play!!! i need some serious help.
ColoBoff5ers 05-11-2007, 01:36 PM Does it keep playing even after you open the door?
ColoBoff5ers 05-11-2007, 01:37 PM P.S I wish I had the wolf whistle alarm mine just beeps. :(
rastayute 05-11-2007, 02:38 PM it keeps playin when i open the door, and when i get out and lock the car i can still hear it from outside!!! i have to turn the radio off before i get out! what the heck could that be?
racerx0911 05-11-2007, 03:13 PM dont you love when its a easy fix!
Qsilver7 05-11-2007, 05:06 PM Im not sure if the e39 is the same way...but on the e38 the fuse index for the ones in the trunk are on the backside of the pull down door to access the battery...just like there is an index on the cover for the ones under the hood:

rastayute 05-11-2007, 06:20 PM oh actually there is! ummm, now im a bit of a noob but, those fuse numbers that are written beside the equipment, how do you know where to find the fuses??? i only see from 1 to like maybe 10 in the trunk
rastayute 05-11-2007, 06:23 PM hmmm, the wolf wistle isnt quite bad, but some how i think that id prefer the beep beep...

If the e39 trunk index is like the one in the (e38's) pic above...the list on the left is the feature + it's fuse number. The box to the right of the list represents the fuse gang box and the numbers listed are the positions for those fuses. In that pic...the trunk fuse gang box starts with fuse #49 which will be at the far left of the fuse gang box...so fuse #62 will be the 14th space from the far left in the fuse gang box.
Again, I don't have an e39 so I can't show you any pics of its trunk fuse gang box...but I do have an e38. You can see how the fuse index on the back of the battery compartment door...lines up with the fuse gang box that's located behind the insulation in the e38's trunk.
Just follow the diagram from the fuse index diagram to find its location...and the fuse index list (which tells you where the fuse, on the list, is located):

rastayute 05-11-2007, 06:55 PM wow thanks! big help, about to run and go look now!
rastayute 05-11-2007, 07:36 PM ok, i've not located the fuses and have seen them, silly question, how do i know wether there blown or not?
rastayute 06-10-2007, 01:18 AM okay, now i've found my alarm, but its being going bananas on me! everytime i go to open the door, id hit the unlock button, open the door and VOILA! ALOT OF UNWANTED NOISE!!! every single time, please help!
rastayute 06-10-2007, 01:33 AM come on guys! i need this! i love my alarm! i've read somewhere that it may have to do with the fact that the battery in the key may be on its way out! what do you all think?
gumbi4u 06-10-2007, 02:01 AM Maybe thats why the fuse was out buddy. Seems like one of the alarm sensors is bad and it keeps triggering the alarm. so instead of fixing it, they probably just yanked out the fuse. looks like you have more troubleshooting in your future.
Well atleast your alarm works, maybe not the proper way but hey...beggers cant be choosers, they can bust out the toolbox and take a screwdriver to something.
Cheers
rastayute 06-10-2007, 02:05 AM it sure looks that way :( i'm sure theres some experienced e39 owner that has atleast seen these symptoms before!
gumbi4u 06-10-2007, 02:08 AM Actually I have seen that before. There is a seperate unit for the alarm. You still need some sort of obdII reader to get a fault out of the 5-6 sensors.
also i reread your previous post, you said when you hit unlock on the remote and pop open the door, the alarm goes off. when you click on the remote to unlock, what do you hear before you grab the handle? does the alarm give you two beeps?
killcrap 06-10-2007, 11:34 AM on early e39's a faulty hood switch or interior motion sensor is the culprit.
bimmerfixr 06-10-2007, 11:41 AM come on guys! i need this! i love my alarm! i've read somewhere that it may have to do with the fact that the battery in the key may be on its way out! what do you all think?
A previous owner may have the arm/disarm from the remote feature turned off so that the alarm will only arm/disarm from the mechanical door lock. Try locking/unlocking using the key instead of the remote and see what happens.
If that's it and you want it from the remote, its dealer time. They should not charge more than about $50. Depends on the dealer though.
Petes540i6 06-10-2007, 05:33 PM P.S I wish I had the wolf whistle alarm mine just beeps. :(
There's about a three to one ratio of people who would rather have the beep. Start a thread seeking someone who wants to trade, and you will find someone.

well, i have a wolf wistle alarm, so no beeps, but when i hit the unlock key, i get the ususal wistle, and the moment i open the door, there it goes. Oh, and i'm pretty sure its not the hood sensor, i've disconnected it the problem still persists.
