I have had contact with several buyers from this seller and heard nothing but good things.

To be honest, this sounds like the damage happened in shipping. Although the shipper is responsible for filing the claim, it is up to the receiver to inspect / report damage in a timely manner. Sending a deposit for the replacement unit until the damaged item is returned sounds fair to me. There are unscrupulous customers out there and the business does need to protect itself.
