View Full Version : Custom supercharger setup
llegos 05-08-2007, 08:47 PM I know many have done turbo setups for much cheaper than what one might cost from somewhere like AA and have good power. I know I probably couldnt save as much money, but I was wondering if anyone has pieced together their own supercharger kit for a price less than what a AA/VF/dinan setup goes for. I did search, but couldnt find anything really close to what I wanted to find, so any help is appriciated. Are their any other cheaper(non-ebay) setups that I'm overlooking both in blowers and turbos? I know modding isnt cheap, but I was looking to see if any shortcuts could be taken because I think fabbing up some parts shouldnt be too bad.
IanBMW 05-08-2007, 10:04 PM Honestly the cost would be way to much, supercharger brackets are a PITA to make. Even if you're really good with a welding machine, and your dad owns a machine shop........I would still just buy a used setup. They go from $2500-3500 average for a complete supercharger setup......so start saving up :)
lorkar 05-08-2007, 10:56 PM Yeah, and don't knock e-bay deals. There are some very honest sellers with great sales. I've picked up 20+ used supercharger setups over the last 3 yrs. The most common are Powedyne early Dinan. Long story short, I've sold several systems averaging 2800 installed and making good money. These are OBD1 . I've personally purchased complete used supercharger setups for under 1000usd. $200 in parts for a rebuild and your set.

im not knocking used quality setup, just the cheapass turbo setups. Ive looked for used blower setups on there and never really came up with much, i guess im not looking in the right places.

You have to be checking daily. Many Auto wreckers get them in and only post them in their ebay store. I admit its been dry the last 2 months but thats how it goes. Then you'll seen ten in a matter of weeks. Good luck.

thanks a lot for the help. If you do snatch one up for cheap you may have a buyer willing to pay you off a little for getting one.:devillook
M5wanaB 05-11-2007, 03:32 PM I did a bit of a custom kit. I used a blower off of a e36 M3 and modified it to fit my E34 525i. It cost me around 3k and I have an extra head unit. Its worked great for me.
5mall5nail5 05-11-2007, 03:49 PM I did a custom kit on my E34 525i using an ASA TM12 blower and a custom bracket and all. Then I went to a custom turbo setup.
hoyabob2003 05-13-2007, 02:26 AM I did a pseudo-custom kit from an incomplete AA kit. I ended up saving around $500 and spending a lot of extra time fabricating things and getting small bolts and adaptors at the hardware store. Then my used blower seized the first day I used it.
If all had gone well for me, I would have said it wasn't worth the savings to go with a custom kit. Since things didn't go well, I'd say it really, really wasn't worth the extra savings going custom. If I had the chance to do it over again I would have spent the extra cash on a new kit and been done with it.

First, what is your budget and power goals ?
New SC kits are cheaper than you think and nothing beats a 0 mile blower and ALL the parts.
If you want to find the parts yourself I do have a set of ERT brackets I'll sell for a good price.
Jim M3 05-13-2007, 11:53 AM A new AA C38 blower is under 4 grand. That is the way to go for the money.
