View Full Version : X5 progression to 4.8is?
FineProperty 05-08-2007, 02:14 AM First post, long time lurker, Porsche 996tt owner (you all seem nice enough that I don't need to appologize for that). My first big crash was in a 2002tii as a passenger, lived to tell about, so BMW's stay on the radar. Current daily ride is a kid friendly Volvo V70R that can play sports car in the snow (really, 300hp, awd, rear bias drive under acceleration).
On to the reason for posting. I've started the search for a replacement for the R wagon in order to get a little more room to haul myself and two couples around to see real estate (job). The Audi V12 twin turbo diesel (which may never come here) and the BMW X5 with the M V10 motor are on my list. So I'm dreaming right?
What are the odds that there is a 4.8is or sport version upgrade for the new body style? The V10, is that possible? I'd love something with a turbo, I live at 7000', is there anything planned for a 4.8t?
Speculation is welcome, answers to be judged a year or two from now.
Preppy 05-08-2007, 09:09 AM I would love to see the V10 in the X5....I mean, a civil 400hp beast for normal driving and then with a push of a button (500hp), you could be giving some decent sports car a nice view of your tailpipes......all in an SUV.
Plus, with a 500hp v10, that would be playing with AMG and CayenneTT numbers there. It would make sense for BMW to step up.
One can only speculate. It took two-three years after the x5 was released before the 4.6is came around, so maybe that's what we will see here.
dello 05-08-2007, 10:34 AM i doubt they will ever add the v10 engine to x5 line-up, for the same reason they never applied the old m5 v8. There will be massive drivetrain issues that bmw doesn't want to deal with, especially developing a tranny/software that came handling the masisve torque and hp and provide awd at the same time. In addition the price will be too much to market such a car, that it make very little sense when sells projectory will not match money invested in r/d and production.
Mad Dragon 05-08-2007, 08:13 PM The E70 4.8i has the same engine as the E53 4.8is. Same size wheels, too... except with RFTs.
FineProperty 05-09-2007, 03:04 AM I know the results will be X5 slanted, but I'm curious to hear the response:
Why a 2007 X5 4.8 over a 2005-06 slightly used Cayenne TT for the same money?
For me, I like the looks and the kids 3rd row seat, plus better handling and lighter weight. The TT has some serious 'go' though.
SomeBMWGuy 05-09-2007, 10:19 AM If you can wait until next spring/summer, you will be surprised by an X5 "upgrade". There's gonna be turbos and a V8.
Preppy 05-09-2007, 11:13 AM Gawd, I hope your source is from BMW NA since you're in NJ :)

Nice. That is most excellent. Thank you for hanging out on BF.C :)
luckywales 05-09-2007, 05:03 PM Of course there'll be turbos - it'll be the same as in the 335i. As for a V8 - there is already a V8.
I'm assuming the TT 3.0 six will be in the Z4, X3, X5, and maybe even a cheaper version of the 6-series.

No. I mean turbo V8.

Don't let too much out of the bag ;)
FineProperty 05-10-2007, 12:57 AM That I can wait for. Thanks.
So the competition next year may be an Audi Q7 V12tdi, Cayenne TT with 3rd row seat BMW style, AMG ML with a turbo? Turbo X5 would be perfect for me out of that list. Unless the CayTT can lose 500 lbs, the diesel Q7 is great, but we can have 2 weeks straight below zero and diesel with anti gel smells and sticks to you.

That's all I'm gonna say.
Tedyo 05-10-2007, 01:36 PM Subscribed. I'm debating this same thing...on a slightly less baller tip.
The current X5 has bugs galore though. My buddy's says the tailgate is open everytime it leaves a stop...yes, it accelerates that fast. Also yells at him for various other things.
I just can't love the Cayenne though...I think a modded Touareg V10 is the way to go.
x5tony 05-10-2007, 05:18 PM i think its an $24k option to add on supercharger!

Gotta love torque! Also, the height adjustable suspension is fun for climbing over fallen trees (curbs for you city dwellers).
